Anyone else coming back into the fold because of 4.0?

I have been a wayward gamer, not having played for the past few years. One day recently I stumbled upon a news announcement about 4.0, and I decided to hit up all my old haunts (enworld and the wizards forums) to get more information. Despite the heaping criticism from zillions of grognards, after reading about it and seeing some of the character sheets I cannot help to be excited about the upcoming edition. Yet i am having a hard time extrapolating on why exactly it has me so excited. But nonetheless it has me quite excited, and I will soon start actively looking for a group in/around the Bothell, WA area. Has this been the case for anyone else? I was a huge fan of 2.0 and 3.0/3.5, but there were definitely problems with it that I feel that this edition will remedy, and turn it into a more ideal system for the kind of games that I enjoy. I think I will try and expound on this in another post.

Also, anyone in my area got a kick ass group going that needs another player?

Are you in northeast nebraska?

Issues I had with AD&D 2E was power creep. One year ago I was looking to start to play D&D again. I liked the skills introduced for 3E, but just by looking at the 3.5 SRD I saw never ending problems with 3.5E. It looked like it was even more power creep multiclass powergaming than in 2E. The class table power curve was too big. Just when I was about to think that I could maybe try 3.5E anyway, 4E was announced. From what I have seen so far, I'm convinced I won't regret my decision. This saved me a lot of money that I will use for 4E instead. Plus 4E gives me hope to DM for the first time in my life.

I am a LONG time DM (I hate being a player! I suck at it and my dice reflect it :( ). The thing about earlier editions of D&D, especially BECMI, was it's ease of DM'ing, which got harder over the years with new editions and rules bloat. With 3.5E it was a BLOAT monster. The power curve thing was tough too. Getting the right encounter that challenged everyone was hard.

4e apparently makes monster easy to run, fun to make, and plot driven again. It also fixes the power curve from what I have read. By having everyone being close to the same mean, it makes gageing encounters easy. Everyone has a role, and eveyone PLAYS. It always annoyed me when it came certain players turns and they tried to take too long to figure out what to do. I kept it going by counting down from 6. If I reached 0, they lost their turn. That keeps it going. From what I have read, this situation is mitigated in 4e (I do not think it will ever go away in any edition).

Thanks for the advice. I think the first month I will be patient with my players. Afterwards if combat turns doesn't start to run smoothly, I'll start counting to 6. But the biggest challenge will be to find a group in my area this summer.

If you are geeked to get back into D&D with 4E then keep your eyes open for our Winter's Tomb, a freebie download adventure akin to our ENNie-award winning Wizard's Amulet, which is designed to be a "download and play right away" scenario for starting off 4E. WA brought alot of people into 3E and we are hoping to do the same with Winter's Tomb. It will be available on the very first day 3rd party publishers are able to put stuff out (no one knows when that will be yet), and it will be free.

I am definitely excited about 4e. The previews make me want to play and run games. Not that I have stopped running games.

While I can't exactly explain it, the previews made me feel like I should update my old 2cnd ed campaign. So I am. I haven't been this excited about D&D and gaming in general in over a decade.

Everything I see seems interesting and exciting. I have ideas about new classes that I have always wanted to see and thanks to 4e they now seem possible. Monster Design philosophy seems better matched to my own ideas about it. And the conflict resolution system seems to be light years better than any of the previous D&D skill systems.

Basically this game has gotten me excited again. And I like that. Not only that but all of the fellow gamers I know are really excited about it as well. It feels almost like we are discovering gaming all over again.

So while I never quit gaming, 4e has brought me back to gaming. Or at least allowed me to remember and renew my joy I gain from this hobby.

Thanks,
Rzach

I left D&D behind shortly after 3.5 came out. I was frustrated with how the game worked, seemed geared toward min/maxing, and general bean counting and rules lawyering. I moved into the land of indie gaming, and thought I'd never look back. The pendulum has swung back though, and I find myself hitting the refresh button on these forums all day long. Yay streamlined 4e!

Its funny, I have not left D&D, but was planning on taking a extended break when my current campaing ended.

Not know. Just debating what/how exactly I want to DM 4E.

I won't be coming back into the fold, but 4e has inspired me to become a first-timer. I have a friend who plays, so once they start a new campaign I'll be getting my feet wet, I can't wait.
