Anyone else long for old days simplicity?

Who likes being insulted? Getting angry over being patronized after insulting folks is like saying "he started it - he hit me back."

Yes, I did cast the first stone. Shame on me.

I called someone shortsighted for something they said. I haven't complained about getting "hit back" as you say, but argued as to why I thought that such views are shortsighted. Are you done, yet, or still looking for blood?

rounser, I don't know why the fact that I have issues with 1e/or 2e (but I have been defending 1e on the boards lately) bothers you. If somehow I came across as implying that anyone who likes 1e or 2e is deficient, I apologize, sincerely. I did not intend to come off like that.

I'm not bothered by anyone's opinion in particular, but simply the statement that "1E sucks" put as fact. I've argued against that "fact".

Actually, you said I was simple-minded or at the level of a 3 year old. ;)

Let's discuss this; I actually own, and over 22 years, have read almost every D&D product printed. I don't think it's closed-minded to say I think a lot of it sucks, because I have actually made the effort to be informed enough to make that opinion. If I had not made that effort, then yes, I'd agree my statement was narrow-minded.

That is a statement that I have not made. As I said earlier, I have explained many times issues I've had with this or that edition in detail.

Also, I don't think we should have to qualify every statement by saying "...but that's my opinion." Of course it's my opinion; I wrote it! Well, if it's my opinion, then, in my little universe, it's a fact. Is it a fact for everyone else? No. That should go without saying.

That's my opinion of those who paint things in black and white and make mass-generalisations on issues which aren't that neatly summarised and best described in shades of grey, and other than absolutes. If this doesn't describe your stance, then that isn't my opinion of you.

All that is 1E doesn't suck. It's not that hard to understand.

EDIT: To take my own advice:

IMO, not all that is 1E sucks. I don't think it that hard to understand.

I think it was Benjamin Franklin who observed that stating one's opinions as if they were fact was unwise, and courted argument. He couched his opinions in "I apprehend...", "From what I gather...", "The way it seems to me..." etc. and although cumbersome, I think his wisdom is particularly relevant to online communication.

I often forget to do that, but try to remember. I find it hard to remember when annoyed, as in this thread.

I think that there's a world of difference between "X sucks" and "In my opinion, X sucks."

I never said that. Again, I've been defending 1e lately.

But, everything about 1e that doesn't suck - save for simplicity alone - is now in 3e.

I'm an old-school gamer. The reason I like 3e is because it makes me feel the way I did back when we were playing 1e in my buddy's garage every Sunday. It's that simple. 2e never got me fired up; it seemed lackluster, perfunctory, like it was a chore to be done for the designers. 3e has that "wahoo" anything-is-possible feel 1e had, but without:

* rigid racial limitations

* fighters with not much going for them except hit points and a THACO.

* confusing saves

* and more, but I'm too tired to list 'em all

Directly - I did not say that! If that's the issue you had with me, then you may be mistaking me for someone else on this thread.

I don't think anything I said on this thread could be taken as anything but opinion. I mean, it's not like "suckiness" can be empirically proven or measured. And I simply said "a lot of it" sucked.
