Anyone know a good alternate Paladin?

I'm looking for something without spells. And maybe without the warhorse. Basically, I want a paladin to be a more direct conduit for his god's power. Lay On Hands is awesome... no waving of the hands, mumbling arcane words, no mumbo jumbo, just concentrate for a half second and let god's power flow through you and into the person you want to heal. Now that's a paladin ability for you. But casting protection from evil by tracing some powdered silver in a circle? I'm a paladin, for god's sake, I should be able to flex my holy muscle (*ahem* not that holy muscle) and have sh-t happen.

I'd love to see if anyone else has done something similar. I'm perfectly willing to do it myself, but if I had someone else's ideas to work off of, that would be great, too.

It depends partly on what you do want them to have.

Would you rather they have spell-like abilities? Supernatural abilities? 'Always-On' buffs or resistances etc.?

Complete Warrior has a non-magic Paladin (along with the non-magic Ranger), but if you haven't seen them already, I would humbly advise you that they suck and are not even worth a second glance.

Any more details?

good point,
paladin spells should be able to use a weapon for the somatic component

Complete Divine has a PrC called "Shining Blade of Heironeous"
maybe you could make something out of that

Uh... yeah, I've looked at the one in complete warrior before... good lord is that bad. I mean, I know paladin spellcasting sucks, but geez.

So, I think they should have more supernatural abilities. I'm thinking something along the lines of holy power points a la psionic power points. As the paladin goes up in level, he gains more HPP and more abilities that use them.

I'd also like to see some auras... many paladins in video games have special auras that help out their party, and I think that would translate well into D&D. The aura of courage is a good start, but the area of effect is too small to be of much use in an average fight. 20' radius would be much more useful.

I don't want a paladin to be able to turn on and off auras like a flashlight... this *isn't* a video game after all, but it would be cool if the aura could improve, and maybe give the player a choice as to what it does (choice of a few different abilities).

I'll take a look at the shining blade of heironeous tonight, and see what's what.

Have a look at the Oathsworn Paladin in my sig. Is that something like what you are looking for? It's a more customizable than the core rules paladin. You just need to come up with more oaths and associated powers.

May I aim you towards:

We'll be releasing this shortly, although it has spellcasting still, the warhorse becomes an optional Paladin ability, and there are a few options for what kind of paladin you want to play - the Exemplar with his auras that help people fight evil; the Follower who serves his deity directly with domain spells and abilities; the Glimmer who fights the undead; the Scholar who is protected from the forces of evil; and the Smiter who takes on evil blow-for-blow. This also provides non-lawful options for Paladins - with six different dedications a paladin can choose from (Freedom, Life, Love, Order, Peace or Truth), each with its own effects on the class' abilities.

Sounds really cool - this might be one of the rare pdfs that I pick up. Pity about the title "Heroes of Battle", though.

Yeah... we'll have to look for a replacement title - we had split up the classes into these books before WotC announced Heroes of Battle... And of course, it just slipped right past me.

Off to email the author about a different name.

Heroes of War? Meh...

The paladin in the little used and little known video game rpg supplement: Diablo is actually quite cool. Auras and everything. no spells no warhorse. Just what you are looking for. Next time you are at your friendly neiborhood hobby shop, check it out, because I am sure there will still be a copy of it on the shelf.

While I like the Diablo II d20 Paladin... I wasn't that fond of the conversions in that book.

Because of this, I did my own version of the Paladin, Barbarian and Amazon.

Now I have to find out where I put them... (The Paladin is a bit too good in this version, but I never got around to toning it down).

(pause as I search through 14 pages of attachments I've uploaded to these message boards over the years)

These are based on the version in the D2 Diablerie book, but made to be more in line with the d20 rules (the D2 books were written BEFORE 3.0 was released, using beta copies of the 3.0 books and are therefore full of mistakes) as well as being more in-line with the video game version of the classes. I would allow the barbarian and amazon in most of my d20 fantasy games as-is in the PDF, but I need to figure out how to tone down the paladin a bit.

Power Points in the PDFs below are treated exactly as Psionic Power Points, btw (but can only be used to trigger class powers, not psionics).
