D&D 3.x Anyone lose their enthusiasm with 3E or purchasing 3E products?

It's interesting to hear about people losing enthusiasm for 3.x edition because of the upcoming 4th.

I remember the change from 1st to 2nd Edition, and it was very different. 1st Edition materials continued to be produced and sold well into the 2nd Edition. I started a 1st Edition campaign after 2d Edition was already being produced ('90/'91), and nobody had any problems getting the 1st edition books at all. Remember, this was before E-Bay. I remember seeing older 1st Edition materials being bought up, without discounting, in preference to the new 2nd edition books.

I remember the "blue print" AD&D books being actively mocked.

Yep... I haven't bought a 3.X product since the official announcement of 4E. I'm not sure that my group wants to switch to 4E right off the bat though since we have been playing an Eberron campaign for the last several months and have only just made 5th level.

I had lost my enthusiasm for buying 3.5 stuff initially after the 4E announcement. But meanwhile it's returned.

Mainly because I realized that it will be quite a long time before I get to start playing 4E. My current estimate is it's about 2 years away. I'll definitely finish my 3E campaign first and I'll also have to wait until the 4E PHB have been translated _and_ I have to convince my prospective players that 4E is so good that it's worth switching and getting the new PHB at least.

I'm still getting the Pathfinder stuff but I haven't felt any enthusiasm for getting any 3.x rule supplements or other source books. I took advantage of the Green Ronin sale, but that's more for personal interest and curiosity rather than the likelihood of putting any of it into a game.

Not I. I am snarfing up 3x bargins as the "slaves to fashion" run away from 3x like a zombie plague. You spent dollars on your 3x collection. I'm spending cents on the those dollars buying it slightly used or from stores clearing out their stock. Almost makes me want to wait on 4e until 2014 when 5e is announced and 4e gets dumped. Is six years too long to wait? I waited three years before starting in on 3x.

I'm interested in that experience, because it's so different from my own.

At the time of the change from 1st edition to 2nd edition, I was teenager in northeastern NJ, directly across from New York City. D&D was played primarily by metalheads. We didn't game with the Science Club and Drama Club kids who perhaps also gamed, so I don't know what they thought.

I'm wondering about where you were living at the time, what age you where, and, if you were also a teenager, what social scene you identified yourself with.

Count me in as done with buying 3X products.

I remember when 2E came out...that was quite a different situation. I never actually bought a 2E PHB and kept using my 1E book for the whole time. Eventually one of my college buddies left the area and gave me his books as a gift. I didn't see the need for an update to 1E at the time, I guess.

When 3E came out, I was playing in this campaign that was heavily house-ruled, and we kept playing it for almost a year after 3E came out. After a while playing 3E it became almost painful to play in that game, and once that GM adopted the new rules no one looked back. Declarative Initiative? UGH!

So with 4E coming out, I see it having a real chance to fix some of the problems with 3X, especially since I use most of the WotC splat books and they have some horrible balance issues. I'm currently running a moderately high level game (12th level) and it is becoming more of a chore to run than something I actually enjoy.

I'm sure when 4E comes out I'll be in some strange hybrid world for a bit, but if it can fix the problems I have with higher level play, I'm not looking back.

In the mean time, I haven't picked up a WotC product since...August, I believe, and there's been no third party stuff since well before that, outside of a Pathfinder subscription that I picked up before knowing about 4E. On the other hand, I have picked up several books that have nothing to do with OGL/D20, so my money has been still going to some good homes.
