Anyone remember Melee?

Oh yeah. My first group wrote tons of homebrew rules to turn Melee and Wizard into a 'real' RPG before In The Labyrinth came out. In fact, if it had come out when it was supposed to we probably never would have bought AD&D. But after shelling out all that money for hardbacks we felt obligated to play it.

A bit of thread necromancy in honor of my revised converson of Cidri octopi for D&D. I think this version is much more playable as a character race.

I wondered about the bump. At any rate, for any old-school fans of The Fantasy Trip, Dark City Games has a free ruleset that's basically a TFT rewrite, and sells some adventures and other rule supplements that are compatible with both their new rules and classic Melee/Wizard. I've only tried the free stuff, it's pretty decent.

Not only do I have Melee, but I also have Wizard, In the Labyrinth, and a host of The Fantasy Trip adventures...as well as many of the Metagames microgames (OGRE/GEV, WarpWar, Chitin, Hot Spot, Helltank, Stalin's Tanks, Rommel's Panzers, etc.).

Those were the days...

Maybe I'll break 'em out for my game groups...

AFAIK, Cheapass is the only one making more than one small game these days...although over time several companies try them out. I purchased several of the TSR games like Saga, and the Task Force games like Ultra-Warrior, and the venerable Lost Worlds/Ace of Aces system games that have hopped from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Absolutely. I'm a huge fan of The Fantasy Trip microgames (odd, given that they'd been OOP for more than a decade the first time that I played them). In truth, because of the detailed hex facing and downtime resolution rules, TFT is my favorite fantasy RPG of all time. I try to port all of those things into other games that I play if I can find the time to do so.

The only Minigames we ever played consistently were Grav Armor, Revolt on Antares and Car Wars (if that counts)

I've never even heard of Melee, if you'd asked me about a proto version of GURPS produced by SJG, Iwould;'ve guessed you were talking about Man-to-Man.

Car Wars sorta counts...as I recall, it was one of the few games by SJG in the old Microgames format.

TB- you ought to track down a copy... The whole Fantasy Trip series was awesome. It started off as a pure wargame and morphed into a true RPG, albeit one in which you could generate a character in under 5 minutes, adventure for 15 minutes (until the TPK), and have the next set of adventurers charging in hot on their heels 5 minutes later!

And you would be right!

[Advanced] Melee, [Advanced] Wizard, and In the Labyrinth made up a GURPS-forerunner that was published by Metagaming.
