Anything to do in Kansas City, Kansas ?

First Post
I might get a job in Kansas City, Kansas.

Thing is I was told that it's a boring city in the middle of the bible belt with nothing to do.

Is it true ? :)

Good lord, no.

I moved from Kansas City to Richmond just 3 months ago. Believe me, Kansas City is not the Bible Belt. Richmond however... well, let's just say the local NBC affiliate here likes to preempt Scrubs with Billy Graham specials.

Kansas City is a very large city (around 1.6 million in total metropolitan area) and is very diverse. I find that the more diverse a city is, the less "bible-beltish" it becomes.

There is a lot to do in Kansas City. But, admittedly the favorite pasttime seems to be eating out a lot, and getting fat. With so many good barbecue and steak places, it's no wonder. There are plenty of great movie theaters there, but I would also recommend the Toy and Minature museum, the Nelson Atkins Museum of art, and shopping on the Plaza. There are some great sights to see. Without knowing what kind of stuff you're into, I can't recommend much more.

I also would heartly recommend that you not live in Kansas City, KS. It's really quite a cesspool of humanity. The Kansas side of KC is typically better, but KC north (on the Missouri side) is growing, and is quite nice as well. Overland Park, Olathe, and Lenexa are very middle and upper-class neighborhoods with great school systems.

There are also some really good game stores there. Tabletop games in Lenexa is located off Quivira and around 78th Street. They have an game room for games, and do a lot of Warhammer there. In Olathe, 31st Century games has a huge space and have a diverse selection of stuff at 135th St. and Mur-len. There are a few others as well, but those are the nicer ones.

Where will you be working?

There are some others on these boards from the KC area, Reddist, Kid Socrates, Urbannen, GMVictory, and a few others I can't recall their IDs offhand.

Whew :) Was only repeating what I heard.

Thanks. I'll try to find some time to go see that. Don't think I'll have much time tho. Anything that is open late ?

I will live in a hotel since this is not a permanent job. I fly in Monday morning and fly back the day before Friday. Contract will last until summer.

Good. Since I will be paid in real money, I plan to spend some of it right there.

Any big music and/or book store ?

Where will you be working?
For HP. It's on Metcalf and College I think...

If it work, it will be me first trip to the States.

Oh, another really cool thing to check out is the Steamboat Arabia. Basically, it's a museum devoted to the contents of a recovered steamboat they dug up which sunk in the 1800s. Really cool museum.

As for music/book stores, there's a 3 story Barnes and Noble on the plaza that's just huge. There are a couple of large Borders. One is at 91st and Metcalf, and another is at 119th and Metcalf, both very close to where you'll be working. There's also a Best Buy at 115th and Metcalf. I'm not much into mainstream music, so I can't help you there. I think there are a lot of small independtly owned music stores in the Westport area, which is where all the bars and clubs are. That area is just north of the Plaza area.

College and Metcalf is a really nice area. It's not really "Kansas City, Kansas". Yes, it's on the Kansas side, but it's technically Overland Park, not Kansas City. If you say "Kansas City, Kansas" people there will invariably think you're referring to Wyandotte county, which is north, and in the "bottoms" area next to downtown. There is a Kansas City, Missouri (called KC MO) and a Kansas City on the Kansas side (called KCK). If you're staying right around College and Metcalf the closest you'll get to KCK is driving through downtown to get to the airport.

I'm very familiar with that area, since I worked not far from there (the Sprint campus is huge, and just down the street from you) between Metcalf and Nall (the next major street over) behind the Best Buy.

If you have any questions, let me know. Feel free to email me as well, - curtis.bennett @gmail.com
