Aquiring new feats

Do you just get to pick a new feat when the time comes, or does it require any special training? Does it need to "make sense" or can any feat be chosen.

I ask because I thought it would be alright to just choose a feat, as long as it reasonably made sense. But one time I was in a pbem game, and the DM required special training for every new feat (which, incidentally, would take a few weeks to master). This turned out to be a real PITA, since I was playing a Fighter.

Heh. See my response in your 'class' thread.

(Summary: Our group uses special training rules for most feats before they can be taken; we have it delineated which feats require training to take and which don't. It's what our group prefers, though it's probably not suitable for other groups.)

If you qualify for it, you can have it, unless its on my list of banned feats.

(Which is a pretty short list - the "sudden" metamagic feats, and any psionic related ones.)

We also do the once you gain enough exp you can level without training or cost. We assume that while you are gaining the exp you are doing your training, not after you have gained it.

That's a published variant rule in the DMG (which rather simulates prior edition levelling rules), I rather like it myself. It's in 3.0 DMG p. 41, "Variant: Learning Skills and Feats".
