Arcane Spell Failure from Reading Scrolls?

Sadly, this ruling makes for some scariness.

A player of mine, running a Cleric with the magic domain wearing full plate and using a large shield, has had a fellow party member create 10 scrolls of... yeah you guess it. SHIELD. Very cheap. And when he reads the scroll before every combat, his AC is absurd. I can't wait until the fixed "shield" spell arrives!

I started using the D20 Modern version:

Shield
Abjuration [Force]
Level: Arcane 1; Components: V, S; Casting Time: Attack action; Range: Personal; Target: You; Duration: 1 minute/level (D)
Shield creates an invisible, mobile disk of force that hovers in front of the caster. It negates magic missile attacks directed at the caster. The disk also intercepts attacks, providing a +4 bonus to Defense. The shield carries no armor penalty or arcane spell failure chance.

By the way, is the bonus unnamed (the +4), so using the "new" shield could the plate mail+large shield cleric read it and get another +4 to AC or does it not stack with armor? You think?

Given, this is a nasty combo.

But it isn't the easiest combo to pull off (you need to multiclass or burn a feat, as described in my previous post), or you need to be a cleric, and choose a deity with the magic domain.

It is a shield bonus, it will stack with armor but not with AC from a shield (large, small, or buckler).
