Are gamers smarter?

social skills isn't intelligence. that's charisma. common sense isn't intelligence, that's wisdom.

i'm your typical HIGH INT low WIS and CHA and STR and CON and DEX gamer.

I'm not going by D&D ability scores. I'm going by 'how well you use your brain'.

And it shows :)

To date, I know of nobody who tries to do intelligence tests on six-month-old children, as they have few to no modes of communication upon which to base a test. Those children cannot be in anyone's definition of "average intelligence", as you cannot include in your average those people on whom you have no data.

Mind you, if the rate at which an individual can learn is part of "intelligence", then your average 0 to 5 year old probably far outstrips your average gamer. :)

You bring to mind a very appropriate quote- "There are lies, damn lies, and statistics". Mark Twain had you in mind when he said it.
Mark Twain did say that but it isn't originally his. He attributed it to British prime minister Benjamin Disraeli. But it wasn't his either. It was, in fact, first said by another MP called Leonard Courtney.

You argument appears to distill down to "gamers are smarter than average since the mentally handicapped can't hack it". This is, of course, utterly useless information. I could use the same argument about drivers, comic book readers, and heck even football players (they do have to memorize a playbook). Do you think drivers are more intelligent than average? By your definition they certainly are since they have to be able to read to pass a driving test.

Buzzard,
I think that the original poster was refering to a remedial class, or those who have learning disabilities, such as dyslexia. This is very different from the mentally handicapped. A number of my fellow teachers, bless them, struggle everyday to teach those with learning disabilities in subjects ranging from math to science to history, yet these students have no trouble learning to drive or play sports. They are not the mentally handicapped. Just wanted to clear that up.

Ok. However I will say that if they can learn how to drive or play sports, they can probably handle RPGs.
