Are you planning on participating in Worldwide D&D Gameday 2007?

Was going to. Went up to the local game store twice today, at different times, stayed there for about an hour the first time, 10 or 15 minutes the second time. No one around, aside from the people working and a few people playing M:TG. :(

Doesn't help that the store needed to close early today, so my regular Saturday group just each figured we'd be cancelling the session for today, even though neither me (the Thursday DM and sometimes-Saturday DM) nor the current Saturday DM ever said anything along those lines. :(

Well, I brought Temple of the Death Goddess (and picked out minis/counters for it) in case the players were experienced and/or there were more than 5. Both turned out to be true, but we weren't even near the end when we ran out of time. One of the first encounters took out 2 party members. In other news, 2 players wanted to make their own characters that ended up not quite cutting it. And one player, to pick on a younger player, cursed him (their only rogue). I was hoping he would get waxed by a trap that the rogue failed to find because of his stupid curse.

Lessons learned (or re-learned) today:
1) Next time a player asks to bring in their own character, think "no".
2) Consider higher levels that prescribed when running a game for the first time. Ow.

Though the adventure was simple, we had a blast. Smart playing held out against bad rolls, and except for the crit to gavin for 34hp by a bugbear, minimal injuries for the most part.

I love those little character treasure boxes. Pure goofy genius. :D

Yeah, the treasure boxes were neat.

Funny, though. Gavin got critted by a bugbear in our game, too. And he was the only one who took a serious hit (although Tara fell into the pit and was attacked by the Mephits, and was almost at half health).

I had Durven. At my lowest, I was at 22 out of 30, hp wise. And I finished the game with 7 hp left on my lay on hands.

Our group did fairly well, apparently. Mostly, I think it was just the GM not playign the critters to their full potential.

Got to the gaming store early and had a great time. Around noon we had just under 40 actively playing or waiting for a table to open up. Local newspaper came by for photo's and interviews around 3 pm.

Good Side
-met a few gamers I didn't know and might be able to join another group
-my first game had 2 fathers and their 10 yr old sons playing. They all had a great time and are going to start a game of their own.
-2nd group were all experienced players, who ran through the adventure quickly. Lots of classic RPG jokes along the way. (Gazebo, 66 on a crit, shooting at the darkness, telling the hobgoblins to stop shouting or they will be taunted a 2nd time, etc etc)
-nice kit from WotC containg mini's, dice, battlemap etc.
-no lawyers, munchkins or greifers at any of my games.

Bad Side
-adventure was skeletal and for the most part poor, although it was easy to tweak to get better results.
-characters were incomplete which irritated the experienced players as they kept trying to come up with alternate ways of accomplishing things

I played Gavin yesterday, and had a blast just launching into combat and winding up the other members of the party by being a little more psychotic than they expected.

DM: "You see a group of goblin archers and two dog things!"
Me: "Charge!"
Paladin: "Hey, that's my job!"

The DM was excellent, really making a lot of effort with the monsters and making them come alive in our minds with voices and acting. I really appreciated that. And the setting at the London Dungeon was awesome!

Had a great time, and I might write it up in the Story Hour forum.

Well I Dmed two slots during the day and we had nearly 50 people show up! Everyone I talked to had a great time and i thought the adventure was a lot better than previous years.

I played in two games.

One saw my first experiences with people cheating in an RPG and with a hard nosed GM of the "anything you say is in character, if you play a girl you have to talk like a girl" variety. Not really fun at all.

The second one was run by a friend of mine and we were introducing the game to three new people. Two brothers and the girlfriend of one of the brothers. They all really enjoyed it and talked about coming back to play again so that was a good sign.

I'll disagree with this. I think it was a good solid adventure for this sort of event. It could have used a character interaction encounter perhaps, but I think the characters were given enough personality to have intra-party interaction with the right group.

There were plenty of opportunities to explore the location and discover some information about what has been going on in several of the rooms (empty or non-empty). The encounters had some cool areas and lots of ways to interact with the environment (the drow was good at that, but dropped in the first attack in the game I ran).

I didn't see that. They did what I think should be standard for this sort of thing. The characters didn't have anything on their sheets that would be irrelevant to the adventure. Many have pointed out the feats the characters have that weren't listed because the players didn't need to know they had them. Who cares if you have weapon focus as long as the bonus is on the sheet? I'm sure skills were the same way. The skill points were likely spent on irrelevant skills.

I had a good time. After we finished our game we played the second of the D&D miniatures scenario (open a booster and have the fastplay characters face them in waves). Everyone loved that scenario.

In the evening a played in a friends scenario. I hadn't had him for a GM in a long time, and he's one of the best GMs in the area. We had fun even though we pretty much didn't get to the end of the scenario due to time issues.

I think it is a bit too much to call it worldwide when the only games taking place in Asia was in Japan. Being in Ho Chi Ming city, Vietnam, it was kind of far away for me to travel.
