That sums up my position as well. I've got a long-running homebrew going so I don't run any published campaign settings.

Ummmm ... you're telling me there isn't a country of dinosaur-riding halflings and a magic train in Eberron? :\

Sure there are, I was just talking about the hard boiled Dwarven detectives...

Of course FR has Lantan and Chult with dinosaur riding dwarves but we won't comment on that one...

Or Greyhawk with the spaceship wreck in Blackmoor or the Egg of COot and RObilar's horse...

Of course Planescape and the Modrons etc.

You seeing my point?

If not, don't focus on what you don't like because that stuff could easily be in your favorite setting but you have chosen to ignore it...

Well, the "Dwarven detective" comment was a dig at the original write-up for Eberron, which I am now told has since been completely superceded. (Sooo, the original write-up, the basis on which the setting was chosen, no longer describes the world. Hmmmm.)

Since I never use prepackaged worlds, I don't have a "favourite setting." In any case, while I won't defend FR (which, like Eberron, pursues an "everything-and-the-kitchen-sink" approach to campaign design), your dig at Greyhawk seems misplaced -- the phenomena you describe are noteworthy precisely because they are so unique. They are not "standard" parts of the world. By contrast, in Eberron, what is unique in a world like Greyhawk becomes everyday.

Planescape is a truly unique setting. Also, by its very nature, it can be tied to more standard settings (e.g. you can run a normal fantasy campaign in which, at some point, the PCs go to Sigil for some unusual adventures, and then return home if they want). Planescape never sold itself as anything but a "compeletely different" campaign setting. Eberron, in contrast, is trying to be all things to all people. As such, it simply does not look interesting (IMO).

That's a bit of a misnomer. In Greyhawk, there's one region that has a derelict spacecraft and radiation. In Eberron, there's one region where halflings ride dragons. It's not "everyday."

Perhaps your complaint is more that there are a number of regions where unique things occur (a psionics-heavy region, a magic 'train' in one area, skyscrapers in one city), rather than Greyhawk where there's only one or two non-traditional things in the whole world?

Not at all. For two reasons.

1) Eberron has shown me nothing i find very interesting so far. In fact, the snippets they have shown in Dragon mag have only switched me off further. Pulp Fiction D&D? Ick. The Phantom and his trusty unicorn? nope. Elven Raiders of the lost Arnor? gleep. The Detective Sherwood Elf and trusty warforged companion watson? eesh. I liked the premise of a world of cultures born of magical influence and war, but then Eberron seems to sharply turn away from what i thought would be really great. True i haven't seen a lot of the setting. But what they have shown over the last 3 months is enough for me to know its not my thing.

2) I have so many settings i own now and several homebrew bouncing around in my head that i want to use, why on Earth would i buy another yet ANOTHER setting that doesn't intrigue me?

Im thinking between Eberron, Iron Kingdoms and Dragonmech something really interesting will be able to be constructed... either a hybrid or two lending content and ideas to the other.

I will see when the sourcebook (Campaign Setting) comes out. I really like parts of it, but I'm not totally sold yet. To me, it seems Iron Kingdoms ploughed this territory much earlier on. So, I'm adopting a "wait and see" attitude. Warforged are cool, but so are Steamjacks. There will probably be much to plunder from it, but I most likely will not run an Eberron campaign (unless my players beg me like little girly men - j/k, guys ;)).

Cheers!
Ian

Not gonna use it. Fluff-wise, it takes D&D in the absolute opposite of the direction I want (low magic, medieval-european-style fantasy)...and, like FR, it's got too much of everything crammed in at once. I suppose, if I was really bored of medieval fantasy (which is unlikely; medieval fantasy is what brought me to roleplaying in the first place), it would be a good setting.

Had to vote 'no', but that's only because a more accurate response was lacking. I intend to use it and it may be my NEXT setting after this one I'm about to start, but not use the entirety of it WHEN it comes out.

The Psion is wise. ;) Me and mine are happy with the Forgotten Realms and World of Greyhawk. Eberron would really have to show us some serious "wow" to make me want to run a game there, plus the fact that everything is new and there's no familiarity with the world really isn't helping things.
