I'm pretty sure it is. ;)

It could have appeared somewhere else.

It certainly is. I just wish there had been more of it.

Oh, sorry, I meant the pinup piece that was posted earlier of the priestess in a bikini casting some sort of spell while standing on a gothic balcony having an imp drool over her. Not the Wildman piece. LOVE that one.

I have to agree that 5e art is good but not great. I would like to see the evocative scenes of 2e art combined with 5e's more modern sensibilities.

The art in the PHB is dull. When it shows characters they are rarely interacting with the environment or opponents. The picture on page 156 showing the caravan is a good example.

Why not pull back a bit and show the fantastic landscape the party is travelling through or show a hidden enemy watching them? Add something interesting instead of having a static, boring scene.

Thankfully, it is getting better. Compare the art in Dragon Heist or Descent to Avernus to the PHB. The full page scenes are dynamic and interesting.

I love that piece. I definitely do not want every single piece in the PHB to be dynamic action scenes. I want camp scenes and travel scenes, and “boring” little scenes like this one, as well.

Other than Dragonlance art, I’ll take 5e (and a lot of the post phb1 4e Art) over most of the oldschool art.

I'm a little worried that you interpret the imp/quasit's expression as "leering".

Really? How would you describe it? What is that imp doing?

Well i mean. Is it constructive to say the imp is learing?

Anyway dont know what dog whistling means but i dont think the imp was learing at all. I mean maybe. But thatd not what i think when i see it.

A "dog whistle" is when you reference political issues (such as using a phrase like white knighting) in order to talk about politics while still maintaining an air of deniability. Saying that I'm "pearl clutching" is an obvious dog whistle reference to "social justice warrior" and is pretty much textbook par for the course for that sort of thing. I'll accept that you happened to stumble across it accidentally and give you the benefit of the doubt.

So, yes, it is constructive to say that the imp is leering. That's exactly what it's doing. It's openly staring at the half naked woman with its mouth open. That's pretty close to the dictionary definition of leering. Note how you would never see that imp doing that if that was a male wizard in a full robe standing in the same position. I mean, come on, it's pretty obvious here.

I had to spend the money on College on an art history class. Damned if I'm not going to try to get as much use as I can to try to justify spending that money
For what its worth i didnt know the thing about modeling things after a south american monkey. So you taught me something.

Although, awkwardly, this means i got to learn that without spending the money.

XD

Pearl clutching does not default to anything political. At all. Its a phrase that many people have used for many reasons. It most commonly refers to overly conspicuous disdain. Second most common usage is the former but with the intebsity thereof being disproportionate to the scenario at hand.

You, not i, are making something political about this.

And you are projecting again. So, and i mean this in the most polite way possible, but you should take your own advice not "dog whistle" as u put it (if im actually using that phrase correctly)

That one is also a Dragon cover. I thought I had that one too but I couldn't find it. Sigh.

This was a much better cover from the same era. A true classic.

Also yes. I wouod see the imp doing the same thing with a mape wizard imo. Why? Because unoike you aparently i dont assume its leering. I assume its cowering in terror and awe.
