Artificer's crafting feats question

Good day all,

I have a question regarding the Artificer Class and the trio of feats that are available to him regarding crafting magic items. The Artificer in my game has the Extraordinary Artisan Feat, which reads "When determining the gold piece cost in raw materials you need to craft any item, reduce the base price by 25%". Now my question is this; since the materials used to craft an item are 50% of the base price do you take 50% of the base price which was reduced by 25%?

For example, if the artificer wanted to craft a belt of giants strength +4, the calculation would go something like this: Base Price 16,000gp. reduced by 25%= 12,000gp. material cost=50% base price which = 6,000gp.

Is that right?

Thanks

No, if you take 25% off first (16000 * .75 = 12000) and THEN halve it (12000/2 = 6000) you are doing it ALL WRONG!

You should halve it (16000/2 = 8000) and THEN take 25% off (8000*.75 = 6000). This makes MUCH more sense.

It should cost 6000gp, not 6000gp like you said.

OK thanks guys.

It just took me by suprise at how cheaply an Artificer could craft magic items. In the last game he did an armor upgrade for the groups warforged. He took raised the warforges armor enhancment bonus from +2 to +5 for only 7875gp. I was really shocked at how cheap that was and just had to question it.

Thanks

Note that you can no longer take such feats multiple times (before errata, it was possible to reduce the cost to 0% of base!)

An artificer's power is limited by the amount of downtime available to him or her. Remember that.

Although if you use your Craft Homonculous class ability to make a dedicated wright, that problem is significantly reduced.

Armor bonuses are cheap, and Artificers are very good at what they do. However, do note that the caster level requirement for armor and weapons is three times the bonus, which is 15th level for +5. The Artificer again is nifty and gets to do it at 13th level, but at 13th level +5 armor with no special quality isn't a huge deal.
