Artificer's Handbook - anyone got it?

Well, the book specifically states thatthe maximum bonus is +5. But, let's see if we can extrapolate it out anyway.

A +10 sword would be a dual bonus item, +10/+10 in terms of monetary cost. To create it, you would need 2 + 10 = 12 spell slots. These would be 10 + 1 = 11th level spell slots with a minimum caster level of 22.
The GP cost would be 10 x (11 + 22 - 1) x 12^2. Or, something like 46080 gp x 2 for the dual bonus feature, or 92160 gp. And will take 396 hours to make.

Hmm, a bit cheap, even considering that the market value is doubled up to 184,320 gp.

Still, even at epic levels, how many people are going to have 12 - 11th level spell slots?

Perhaps a better example to see how we can abuse the system is to use a +7 sword.

9 - 8th level spell slots with 16th level as minimum caster. It will have 37260 gp in creation cost with a market value of 74520 gp and will take 216 hours to make.

It does seem like there should be an Epic modifier. While crafting Epic weapons shouldn't be impossible, it might be a little too easy if you are just extending out the rules from the Artificer's Handbook.

I would be interested in hearing how Curtis would weigh in though. (Although, I guess he would have to do so in an informal manner since ELH isn't in the SRD yet.)

[Edit - I see Curtis has already posted!!:)]

The epic level rules change the cost conventions for epic items. I think if you want to make a fair comparison, you should tweak the SS system likewise. Perhaps you would need access to some epic level feat that lets you make epic SS items with levels exceeding those proscribed in the book.

Curtis any chance for expanded rules making for making powerful items for characters above 20th levels?

Crothian, honestly, I hadn't really thought about it, but I could see that it would require some new rules. Obviously, no one's got 11th level spell slots to pull this kind of stuff off. I may just have to write that book of magic items with expanded rules after all. :) I'd like to delve more into artifact creation, and do more with construct creation rules using this system.

Curtis,
FWIW - I was pondering constructs just yesterday! :) I was also wondering about fantastic, magical architecture. Although, I could probably just wing that if need be.

Sounds like you have enough material for a sequal Curtis!!

Yeah, but for the epic ones we need to have a simetric name system with epic level, because it is not open, and for constructs it would be great, you could even add everything about psionics, after all it would make for a great addition, I don't play it, but people seem to like it a lot.

Whenever I have some time I will try to see what is made different on the original rules and the epic level ones, they had to make some scale in there for so different prices and that could either be used to scale further and to be a base for a future tome: Artificer's Handbook: Expanding the Craft.

Ow, You may use the name if it appelas to you then, just put my name somewhere on the book, even with .8 font...

I am waiting for the online enhancement for the Artificer's and also want to say that I am truly happy with it being 100% SRD...

I don't thin you need the epic items to be open for this. Sure, you can't use any of the items in the ELH as examples, but there is no reason you couldn't create a sword+7, or an item that gave +60 to hide checks. Just create ways to make items more powerful (and more creative) then in the DMG. I see this and the orginal book more for creating new items, then worrying about the ones printed in books.

I would agree with Crothian there. The whole "Epic" concept is in the new SRD now, so that cat is out of the bag.

So, as long as we're listing out wish lists, what else would people like to see in this hypothetical new book? :)
