I thought this, too. But upon rereading my 1e DMG a few months ago I came across this on page 125 -

However, even a small taste should suffice to identify a potion in some way - even if just a slight urge.
That's not a rule - that's a vague suggestion. Which is why I credited 5th edition with making that particular thing a rule.

DM: "You're in the privy."
Player: "Is there anything magical? What school?"
DM: Yes there is. The aura is obscured, like it's behind/under something, but there is definitely something there.
Player:
DM: Are you going to climb down and get it?

edit: Yes it IS April Fools Day.

I forgot to mention imp familiars. I REALLY hate those. I ended up giving our parties imp an obnoxious personality just to tone it down. That thing is super powerful at low levels. In the hands of a tiefling it can see in magical darkness. Sheesh!

I did the exact same thing...tied it in to the Warlock's infernal patron who wanted the Warlock to do more and more evil things.

The Warlock decided to MC into a bard and they placed the imp into a demonic prison to keep it from reporting back to the Warlock's patron. The patron (and the imp) were not pleased.
