Asgard question PLANES

I have a quick question for those of you who know the planes.

On the outer plane of Ysgard, where do you think the Gnomes and Halflings should hail from? Nidavellr or Alfheim? I'm thinking gnomes should also be from Alfheim instead of the realm of the dwarves.

Thoughts?

I've categorized them as the following for our off-world campaign:
Nordheimr – Ysgard Descent
As D&D races, but have left that realm via the bifrost bridge or Plane of Shadow (see Manual of the Planes p.90+; Deities & Demigods p.156). Their plane of origin appears below and is considered their “homeland.”
• Alfheimr – Elf, ½-elf, Halfling
• Gladsheimr – Human
• Nidavellr – Dwarf or gnome
• Muspelheimr – Half-orc
• Language: Ysgardian
• Background skills: As D&D
• Favored Class: As D&D

Thanks in advance!

You're right, Nightfall. Threadcrapping is cool. Randomly spouting your dislike for gnomes and halflings whenever they're brought up is a fantastic idea!

I would go with Alfheim for the halflings, and Nidavellir for the gnomes and dwarves.

The halflings could represent a certain type of the alfar, and the gnomes a type of dwarf.

As for halflings and gnomes, they can model various types of fey like creatures from different cultures. The word gnome, as recall, was first used by the mystic/alchemist Paracelsus to refer to certain types of spirits with knowledge of the earth.

Midgard. The Material Plane. Neither of them correspond with Norse mythological beings, so I don't see why they should hail from any of the Norse outer planar realms.

I like the rationale of gnomes as earth creatures, but in D&D, they seem to be the bridge between the dark and the sunlight realms (simply making their house underground, but not their communities). Alfheim or Muspelheim seem's more applicable doesn't it by definition in the PHB?

Can you imagine a gnome from Muspelheim? Sounds cool in a regular campaign!

As much as I'd like to avoid having any D&D races whatsoever in my campaigns, I've noticed that "new" players to any world need familiarity to get their first grip of a campaign. There are drawbacks to being a non-campaign race, but the option is always there. Plus, the "history" of Ysgard really makes it kind of interesting.

Yes, good point, but I need them to be "not" from any material plane. I'm just seeing what's probably most appropriate with the definitions in the Manual of the Planes.

Thoughts?
