Atlantis: Second Age (The Arcanum of old)

That post hurt.

It's just one guy's opinion, so I wouldn't worry. Wallets speak much more loudly, and the wallets seem to be saying "d20" quite a bit despite the supposed glut.

EDIT: By the way, Rasyr - if he's the same one here at EN World - is the designer of the current edition of HARP, so it's not surprising he warns them away from d20 and then pimps HARP. He seems like a pretty nice guy here, but I don't think his assessment of the market at this time is entirely accurate.

Allow me to step off topic for a minute and be an old fogey ... but ...

Hey Frutharka! Excellent quote from an excellent song, but I'm afraid its older than the Bangles. Simon and Garfunkel did it first.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread, already in progress. :)

d20.

The atlas stands on its own and has no mechanics in it that I recall but I would like to see d20 versions of the bestiary and class books that I heard good things about but never actually saw.

Why would one not do it in D20?

...

Ummm ... Maybe because there already is a glut of third party d20 products on the market now, and third party companies producing d20 products have been seriously hurting over the past two years?

Anyway, I think it would be most prudent for them to try to produce a 'system neutral' version of Arcanum, with free pdfs on how to use the materials for d20, GURPS, OAD&D, etc. available on a website.

Just my two platinum pieces.

Atlantis At Last

I have a homebrew system that I use with the old Bard Games materials. I have to say that this is my favorite setting of all time. Unlike Talislanta which is a very interesting and wierd place, The Atlantean World is familiar.....most of you will know what I mean.

I would be interested in any incarnation of this game. However, if it must be d20, it really should be a good version of it. To my mind, the new Conan d20 is pretty close, perhaps too close (we used to use Conan and Atlantis concepts interchangeably).

I would love to see a new version of Atlantis, not a repackaging of D&D to fit Atlantis....I mean that's been done (probably numerous times in various homebrews).....

Anyway, I'd love to see what you come up with.

Go d20, but DEFINITELY stick to the two types of classes, with different XP advancement - this is something I've been working on for my own homebrew d20-based campaign, all because of Arcanum.

Hmmm... sort of like a system to use standard and gestalt classes side be side.

The problems with this seem obvious, yet I must admit, having loved the original Arcanum, that I find the idea intriguing.

Personally, I would choose Tal4, for the rules system. There are alot of D20 products out there, so if you should choose D20, it would have too stand out and be markedly different. Both in system and setting. Using Tal4 you would promote your housesystem even more and hopefully be able to create some more diversity in the rpg market. This is just my oppinion, though.

A great way of doing the books, would be three books, like the original. One for the setting, one for the rules and a bestiary. The last could even feature dual stats for the critters, if you are so inclined. An online pdf booklet could feature further D20 stuff, like a few PRC's and spells.

Hey all,

Just wanted to drop in and let you know that we are not ignoring you. Yes, we are working on a new version of the classic Atlantean trilogy from the 80's. Beyond that, I'm afraid it is far to early to go into any details on what will, or will not be in the new game.

That said, please feel free to continue posting about Atlantis and let us know what you hope to find in the new version. We have not yet settled on anything hard and fast so your commnets can still influence what we do with the game. For example, which system to you guys want to see? d20? Tal4 rules? GURPS? Class and levels or skill based? How many books? One big one like Tal4 or a few smaller ones? Etc, etc, etc.

After all is said and done we are hoping to release this game just before xmas if all goes well.

Cheers,

I'd like this product to use the Tal4 rules. I'd also like it to be one big book like Tal4.

That's exactly the goal, Alan. Except of course, having the gestalts pre-determined, and not quite as potent as true gestalts are.

At first, it would be more like multi-classing, but as we all know, multiclassing at higher levels leads to power reduction for most casters and many other classes, so that's where the power level for the dual classes ramps up.
