Avenue Q

The Wife and I saw Avenue Q yesterday.

I have to say, this is probably the funniest musical I've ever seen.
With great original songs like "My Life Sucks", "The Internet is for Porn", "If You Were Gay", "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist" and "You Can be Loud as the Hell you Want (When You're Makin' Love)", puppet depravity has never been so funny.

For those that have never heard of Avenue Q (please get out more) take 1 part Sesame Street, 1 Part Cats, 1 part Vaudeville/Cabaret show. There is a warning that there is "Full Puppet Nudity", while not exactly true, there is a pretty explicit puppet sex seen.

The most interesting thing to me as a performer though was the seamless integration of the puppets. Unlike Sesame Street the puppeteers are visible the entire time (you can even see them doing the dialogue during the show) but it was amazingly easy to ignore them and focus on the puppets.

The majority of the humor is not Grandma safe and would probably give Eric's Grandma her final moments on the Earth. The music is edgy, the humor is base but thumbs it's nose at PC (Gary Coleman - yes the dead actor, is one of the main characters), they make fun of several religions, and almost every political system known to man. Even so, this is a show that consenting adults will probably want to see.
