Hello everyone,

i am about to run this module using Labyrinth Lord rules to allow my players a bit more choice of Class and Race etc...

The module says it works for a group of about 5000xp each. Okay.

What I couldn't see was how big that group should be?

Have I missed it? Can anybody advise me as to a good size of PCs to run the game for.

Many thanks,

RevT.

That info was often on the front cover of classic modules.

As a general rule, the authors expected about six characters, and sometimes NPC henchmen and hirelings, to be used in the game.

Hey Whizbang :)

thanks for the reply...I did look at front cover but no joy.

just found the guide though...hidden on the top left of the contents page!

5-8 characters, levels 2-4

thanks for your help. I was also thinking about six 3rd level PCs so that's okay.

cheers,

revt.

Just to lob this in, as I've run it twice now:

That module is big enough that it kind of expects the PCs will be about 2nd level going in and probably 4th level coming out. If you're starting the adventure with a 3rd-level party that's fine but they might find the early bits something of a pushover...unless you beef up the enemies a bit. :)

Once they get deeper into things their level will be just what the module expects.

**SPOILERS BELOW**

I have used this module as the basis of my 4e campaign (though mixing in lots of other material too). The PCs started at 1st level (with the river, the bear whom they tamed and befriended, the stockade, the hunt for goblins through the forest). They went to the island around 4th level. They investigated Xitaqa (where I mixed in elements of the 4e module H2) around 6th level. They finally got to Threshold around 11th level, and into the valley (where I substituted an adapted version of the 4e adventure Heathen in place of the module's inhabitants) around 15th level.

They never actually delivered the horses - that was done by NPCs offstage.

Because of its open structure, it lends itself well to improvisation and interpolation, and I just scaled the challenges as I needed to. (I also used minotaurs as the ancient race, because (i) I like them and (ii) that fitted better with H2.

Thanks everyone, I have only two players so going to need them to play a couple each...I am think 3rd level x4 should work ok :)

The PCs started at 1st level ... around 4th level ... around 6th level ... around 11th level, and ... around 15th level ...
He's running it in an OSR system, pemerton - I rather suspect he won't have to worry about level numbers like these. :)
