Yeah, exactly. It would be a fool's errand to try and steer them back toward focusing more on the game and less on the craft beers. I most likely will stop playing with this group in the near future.

Some times its just what you need to do. I dropped a campaign I was about a dozen sessions into running at the end of last year because I concluded that the dynamic was one that just didn't work for me anymore, and I didn't think it was going to change (and this was with people I've known for decades).

I quit a gaming group in 2022 after 13 years.

There were two big problems. First the game was based in Seattle and I live 62 miles away. The group was Seattle-centric and the gaming schedule was based around the convenience of the majority. For over a decade I struggled with this. I said various changes made things harder for me. They listened politely but rarely was I accommodated. And in a sense, why should they? I was one player. Everyone else lived in Seattle. This was a constant source of inconvenience and sometimes stress.

The other big problem was the preferred gaming style of the group. They preferred a very gritty, low-powered game. They eventually stopped playing D&D and one factor was they considered it too high magic and high powered. This was a source of friction. The last straw came when they said the next campaign would be a modern World of Darkness game. Our PCs would have no magic, no powers and no psionics. We would be playing ordinary people. They already knew my gaming preferences. I said I would prefer Vampire, Mage or Werewolf. No was the collective reply. I said I quit because I'm not driving 62 miles for a game I have no interest in. They were sorry but they let me leave.

These folks are good people and longtime friends. I still see them around 3 times a year. But we don't game together anymore. I miss seeing them but I don't miss the game or the long drive.

The DM has posted the details for his next campaign, and I have decided not to join in.

Firstly, he states that he is going to use milestone leveling instead of XP so each level will last longer. I don’t want the 1st and 2nd levels to last longer! I want to skip over them entirely!

Secondly, he says that the party has gathered in hopes of “getting rich quick”. Being an adaptation of Dragon Heist, this campaign will emphasize the heist and the riches. It’s got a strong mercenary vibe. I prefer to play heroes fighting the good fight.

Thirdly, one of the players has already submitted their PC, and its name is a play on “pot you piss in”. 🙄

No thank you!

Those rumored AI DMs are sounding better by the day.

Decision made here. Gonna close down old campaign wasn't working.

Going forward newbie friendly game more focused on social aspects.

Wednesday board game night. Gonna try out some new ones.

Thursday Castle and Crusades

Sunday 5E.

One of the new players sat beside wife. Wans to hit stuff hard. Wife broke down Battlemaster vs Champion for her. They asked for my opinion on maneuvers several were functionally the same as BG3.

Think I'm doomed. New players getting along great and being trained by resident powergamer. AKA the wife.

Looking at a newer player with polearm master, battlenaster fighter. She's also figured out the fast leveling in C&C rogue class.

Proud or terrified? They're plotting. Think I need to avoid any games on Wednesday were I can get 2 vs 1.

Other side of the table while I was in bathroom the new dragon sorcerer player is packing twin spell, ice knife and chromatic orb for some strange mysterious reason.

Tortle monk isn't to shabby either.

It sounds like you spoke with the DM, made a fair decision, and burned no bridges. It’s probably the best outcome you could have hoped for. My group (old friends) also try craft beers, except for me. Not a beer drinker…
