Background Question: Why Drows are NE and not CE?

On page 12 of the monster manual it says that usually means more than 50% of the creatures have the given alignment.So that still leaves 49% to be something else.

As for Lolth she is mentioned as being a demonlord on page 4 of return to the temple of elemental evil.As for being killed in that book maybe it was an avatar or something.Lolth is also named regularly as a goddess in both realms material and generic material over the last 20 years or so.

Lolth is pretty much both. She used to be Araushnee - Corellon's consort and a member of the Seldarine. When she was cast out for betraying her peers, she was changed into a demon-like creature. There's no doubt that such a fall would have cost her a substantial portion of her divine power (as well as possible loss of portfolios). Futher - there's no doubt that her power increased over time following the fall of the Drow.
In all newer products she is noted as being an Intermediate Goddes...
