Balancing Classes with Hindrances

My homebrew RPG is ready for classes. Since it's designed to be a use-based class system, where you get better at what you do most, a player can basically custom-design his class. But the progression is slow, and in d20 terms, characters get one ability point, one skill point, and one feat per level (with feats expanded to include racial and class abilities).

So to make level progression more interesting, I'm thinking about adding classes that give you a special skill point, and a class-themed feat each level. However, you must give something up for those benefits. Such as:

Fighter - loses right to cast spells.
Wizard - loses right to use any armor and most weapons.
Thief - can only use light armor, and up to one-handed weapons.
Priest - no heavy weapons or heavy armor, and has a code of conduct.

Do these restrictions look like they would balance the benefits? Do some of them cause one class to be better than others?
