D&D General Baldur's Gate 3 will now be releasing August 3rd on PC and September 6th on PS5, increased level cap, race & class details and more

You know, I'm really interested to see how they handle Shadowheart's artifact. Knowing Sven considers it a design mistake and wishes he didn't do it adds a lot of dev humor for me. I'm sure it will be fine, but it made me triple curious.

We've all done things as a DM we wish we'd done a different way. :D
Making it look like a D20 is a bit on the nose.

My son, a gamer, grew up surrounded by this stuff, played through BG1 and IWD as a kid, asked me about Wrath of the Righteous after I told him about the 'special ending'. He made it through character creation and then I showed him what my 'save before the last fight' party looked like, walked him through the various options and buffs and synergy and....he declined to play. :D
You're raising a smart kid!

Pathfinder 1E's buffs are just what pushes it over the edge into "Nah screw this!" territory. I got a lot of the way through WotR and then I was just like "If I need to rebuff one more time..." (that combined with the nuclear-ultra-boredom of Crusade Mode, easily the most boring and annoying strategic layer I've seen in any game, beating even the annoyance of PF:KM's frustrating RNG-based layer). I might give it another chance with one of the buffing mods or something, but it's madness and really limits accessibility.

(I have no idea if PF2 fixes the buffing issue, but I assume so because jeez. Looks like Owlcat have the 40K RPG and "unnamed possibly original IP sci-fi RPG" up next anyway.)
Some of those character names are a bit dodgy though - Ver'yll Wenkiir the ranger?
I mean, they mostly just look like "Forgotten Realms names" to me, though Wenkiir/Wanker is flying a bit close to the sun. Am I missing something? I suspect he's a Drow which might be part of the reason for the ludicrous name.

The last three are the ones which stand out for me - Fafner is a direct non-FR mythological dragon, Kree Derryck sounds like a NFL or NBA player and Sir Fuzzalump sounds like an incredibly annoying character someone visiting might make for a one-off game. None of them inexcusable or anything. Well maybe Sir Fuzzalump is.

I have no idea if PF2 fixes the buffing issue,
it pretty much does. it's still a game about fishing for whatever advantages you can, but it's not so much highly esoteric logistical strategy via obscene buffing as it is in-fight tactics and situation-specific buffing (well, and an equipment treadmill, but they have a variant rule if you wanna rip that out). it's so much more intuitive it's not even funny.

Am I missing something?
First name "Very Ill"? Sounds even better in an Australian accent. Edit: after extensive experimentation, I have discovered that South African is a better accent for this name.

Agreed. I don't run a particularly serious game, but if someone turns up with a character called Sir Fuzzylumps they deserve a smack.

Hopefully the default names are changeable, and without having to go though the whole character creation process.

And I find the lack of beardy dwarves disturbing.

Not that I'm ever likely to use this feature myself, I shall be happy enough with me mates Karlach, Wyll and Shadowheart.

Humorously, the most fun I had in WotR was a fully magic immune party, with a focus on ripping off enemy buffs. It really changes the game and what enemies you need to focus during fights. And you almost never need to worry about buffing.

Except death ward. Because negative levels don't care about magic immunity. 😭

Yeah it does have the same core problem as most mercenary-type systems in that why would you remove an actual character from the game and replace them with a sort of shadow of a character. BG2 made me do it because the default companions were a bunch of ultra annoying bickering twats so I played that as four created characters ("multiplayer") with two slots open so I could bring two of the annoyances with me in order to do my quests. But no one in BG3 is that annoying, not even Astarion.

The evil party for BG2 is probably my favorite of all time. The banter was a big draw for me personally.

I honestly felt like I was driving around a car full of particularly dim and extremely drunk teenagers who mostly hated each others guts (with a party with various characters in it, not really good or evil). And there's just no way to shut them up except to separate them, and none of the insults (or weirdly fervent compliments) they trade back and forth has like, any, value. It's mostly not even funny, just like, kind of pathetic. Some of the characters in BG3 chat back and forth but it's a hell of a lot calmer and like it's mildly snarky adults rather than drunk teens. That was before I had my ADHD meds so I was probably a lot easier to wind up.

I still remember when I decided to stop that car and go back there. I was on the docks in Baldur's Gate (in BG2), not that far into the game and I was like "Okay, nope, that's the end, out of the car, you're walking" and went and just restarted entirely with 4-person built party.

Going to play BG1 EE shortly so we shall see if I am able to better withstand it 23+ years later. If not well there's a solution!
