Barbarian Class in this month's Dragon !

I wounder if the 'stict' of primal classes is two roles...I think I read that druid was that way...so maybe a defender that when rageing is a striker...or maybe I have let my fever get the better of me...

Nope, that was said about the Druid at some point. But I believe Mearls recently debunked the idea of "hybrids," saying that's not really a direction the game will go. Wish I had a link...

However, going on comparison, in the MM, a Goblin Skullcrusher that has a rage effect, is classified as a Brute (and not a skirmisher) and Brute does seem to equate closest to (but not always) a defender.
Hmm. Isn't the soldier monster role the best equivalent for the defender pc role?

Anyway, my guess is the barbarian will be a defender.

And yes, hybrids was an idea that went the way of the dodo - and I'm really glad for it!

Thanks for the update, someone else said that but I haven't een that yet. I am of 2 minds on this.... I liked the idea of switching from encounter to encounter...but I was afraid of power creep and th 'one man party'.

In that case I say striker...high damage mobal low armor melee combatant

I have to say, I'm very excited about the prospect: I've got a player in my game who really wants to play a barbarian, and no amount of fudging ranger or fighter seems to fit what he's looking for. Maybe something with the name Barbarian will sate him. :D

I'm rather hoping for a striker with some staying power abilities, ala Conan and the traditional pulp barbarian heroes. High endurance (Con based attacks?) but not particularly good at keeping targets interested in him (no defender taunt mechanics and other such toys).

I read the barbarian was confirmed as a primal striker...I just can't remember where I read that. :erm:

Still thinking Striker is the most appropriate. But we have so many of those, I wouldn't mind seeing another Defender.

We have three Strikers (Warlock, Rogue, Ranger) and three Defenders (Fighter, Paladin, Swordmage: out next month) that I know about, unless I somehow missed one.

But that said, a Striker that can absorb a significant amount of damage, rather than dodge or stay away from it, would fit the bill quite nicely. I just can't see barbarian rage as a marking mechanic rather than an extra damage mechanic. But then again they could totally surprise us all and make it a melee-range controller with the primal power source.

Not to derail the thread again but the online format has worked out really well for me personally even if it may not be right for everybody. I mean at least so far I've gotten several issues worth of articles for free, I know that won't be that way forever but for now it is, and I don't have to wait until the end of the month to read the articles I want and I don't have to drive anywhere to pick it up. Plus the art has been killer and the articles have been great. Like I said I know it's not for everybody but as with much of 4th edition it fits me perfectly.

Now back to the original topic. I am very excited about the Barbarian class. I had no idea they would be playtesting it so early. I hope we see advance copies of the Bard and Druid too. Even if we don't the Barbarian is an awesome class. I can't wait to see this one. While I can see striker, and I would totally be fine with it, I hope they go with defender. It just seems more like a defender to me than anything else. It's just a defender class that uses tons of HP instead of AC to absorb the hits. A true meatshield if you wil. :D

And perhaps even damage resistance....

Yeah, I definately think we will see some kind of mechanic like this in play.

As for defender vs striker, I see teh barbarian as more of a striker, but again I would be fine with it either way.

However, it will be interesting to see how they go with it if he's a striker. My guess is they will stay traditional and give the Barbarian up to hide armor proficiency. I wonder if they will do a DR mechanic, just give him defender hitpoints, perhaps teh ranger toughness feat or something similar. Basically...what will they give the low AC guy who stands in front that will ensure his survivability.

I look forward to finding out.
