Not every barbarian needs to look like David & Peter Paul to be considered one, although I will be disappointed if Raised by the Dirtmaster isn't available as a background. :p

The hell you say!

I would caution using D&D as a reference to what Fafhrd was like. I'd suggest reading the books, because his background is pretty much the stereotype "giant wild animalistic warrior from the great north who loves the ladies and killing things"

I concur. Unlike Conan, Fafhrd actively disliked his barbarian origins and we meet him when he decides to flee his clan for civilization (after which he joins up with the Mouser). Throughout most of the Swords... stories, Fafhrd acts much more like a fighter than a typical D&D barbarian -- but then, Conan may be the visual inspiration for the AD&D barbarian, but that class hardly encompasses all that Conan was. Racism notwithstanding on Howard's part, the Conan stories are some of the best S&S ever written and Conan one of the most complex S&S heroes.

Really, i would have been happy with the barbarian as a fighter subclass -- add rage, ta da! -- and let background determine whether the character is a Viking, a Celt ::cough::Cimmerian::cough::, or a Maori.
