I like the art. Reminiscent of a more fully clothed version of the Barbarians from Bungie's game Myth:

I don't mind clothed barbarians, the one I posted is very clothed. The one in the PHB just looks to me honestly really lame, with nothing really fierce or savage about him, ok he has an axe, that looks more like fashion accessory than a weapon for him. Looks like the wanna be hipster version of a barbarian, and even that is being generous. He even has a hipster messenger bag! gah!

He's all like "look at me I got an axe, but I don't even know how to use an axe, I'm soooo ironic!"

In my opinion of course.

Yeah, obviously I'm totally cool with the one they went with. I don't see how you can go wrong modeling your barbarian after one of the most iconic barbarians of all time in fantasy literature, but apparently a lot of people think so.

It's not just the guy really, it's the pose, clothes, settings, lighting, etc... I think they could have used the same guy overall but changed the "feel" of the art and it could have been ok. The whole thing just yells lame to me as it is now. It's ok, I've liked most of the 5e art so far which is really fun, but there are few exceptions, this barbarian being one of them, for me anyway.

I read through all of this (transvestite go-go cowboys and all) and nobody cares to mention the king of meaty conan-esque art: Good Ol' Boris (seriously, browse the art. Here's a sample:

)

Conan and Fafherd are cool and all...but nobody captures the S&S image better than Boris.

That is the thing about art. I always pleases everyone all the time.

...or something like that.

:D
