[One or two movies pass; Batman has encountered the Joker, etc. Dick Greyson is 15ish;
the young man that will be playing the teenaged Superman seems perfect for the role
edit Um, he won't by the time a couple more movies pass, though, dang it. SOmeone else but with that general demeanor]
Gotham's underworld is still reeling from the removal of Falcone and the loss of the Narrows to the insane. Without any real leadership, some of the criminal element have gravitated to the masked loonies that have popped up. Joker. Scarecrow. Penguin. Fragmented, they've been comparativelly easy pickings for Batman.
Others, though, remember how things used to be and turn to Rupert Thorne, formerly a protoge of Falcone that has snapped up Falcone's illegal interests, especially shipping and smuggling. A prized underling of his is a man named Zucco who is responsible for collections. Thorne declares that no costumed loonies are going to take over his town.
Haley's Circus is in town and the owner is in trouble. He's been using the travelling show to smuggle drugs for Thorne but now he's lost the shipment because the star performer John Grayson discovered the drugs hiding place and is going to go to the cops after tonights show. Zucco, as chief of collections, finds this out and knows he's screwed if he doesn't do something. He's paniced and not thinking too clearly. He decides to kill John Grayson.
"Mawster Bruce, I hereby command you to go forth and have fun," Alfred said earlier so Bruce is at the circus, wandering around the grounds with a lady friend on his arm showing that the Prince of Gotham is a human being as well. He ineptly tries to win a prize for his lady, and fails miserably, but it's all in good fun. Bruce sees Zucco in the background and wonders what the new crime boss's right hand man is doing here, so he makes an excuse and goes to follow him.
He moves into the seedier back-stage areas of the circus and is confronted by some of the local help, not carny folk but local hired labor who are just a cut above thugs themselves. They see the stumbling nice-dressed guy and decide to roll the tourist for his wallet. Bruce gives a slight smile as the pair close in, then suddenly one of them is down and out from a heavy juggling pin thrown right into his forehead. The second turns and gets a nice jump kick to the face. Two men, down and out in less then a couple seconds. Bruce turns to see this kid walk over and retrieve his club, then give a nod to the tourist. "Sorry they bothered you mister; the roustabouts will thrown them out."
Bruce, totally shocked, can only manage. "Um, thanks son, umm"
"Richard Grayson. I'm in the main show; come watch."
The show proceeds as normal until the final act. Dick performs the quadruple somersault, the youngest person ever to do this, while his parents watch below. Zucco takes the opportunity to gun down the Graysons. Dick slides to the ground, kneels over his parents; Bruce in the audience has all kinds of flashbacks.
Dick show up at the Manor; Bruce has pulled strings downtown and offered to put the boy up while the investigation is underway and - perhaps - give him some perspective, having undergone a similar trajedy. It's night by the time Dick gets there, though, and Batman is already on the prowl, looking for Zucco to see if he either is the killer or can place the killer. Dick is standing by the window, the Batsignal visible up against the clouds. Alfred comes in and Dick says he knows why Batman does it, puts on the mask and goes out into the night. (Tim Drake has a great soliloquy about this when his mother is killed; just copy that).
Batman uncovers the drugs/Grayson/zucco connection and begins tracking things down. Meanwhile he has to make social nice-nice and be Playboy Bruce for a time. He drags Dick along, in a suit, and the women make over him; basically, it looks like Bruce is using Dick like guys use dogs - to draw in the girls. Someone makes this observation to Bruce and Dick. Bruce looks down to apologize, and Dick just shakes his head. "No need. I've been around performers all my life. You're good, but I know this isn't you."
Lt Detective Gordon comes to the Manor to give Dick details about how the investigation is going, which is mainly to say that they don't know much yet - They have not made the drugs-Grayson-Zucco connection yet. There is discussion about vigilantism and justice.
That night, Dick has decided to take matters into his own hands. He's modified his old performing costume into a darker version (tights, no shorts, very dark red for the tunic - I'd like the cape, but there is a great picture I've seen in a fairly recent issue of... something.. that had him in a ballistic jacket - I could live with that, and we don't get comments about him wearing bright yellow, even with the new 'yellow on the inside, black on the outside' cape Tim Drake has) ... and he puts on the mask for the first time. He goes back to the circus to talk to the manager, whom he knows is crooked. Robin makes the man talk, and Zucco's name is now known to him. He leaves, and the manager calls Zucco. "Boss! Now there's two of them!"
Thorne is impatient. He has a sizable shipment ready to leave tonight (and it must be tonight or the 'boys in Chicago' will come pay him a visit with machineguns) along with the circus; the police are watching the ports and now there are masks sneaking around his only other distribution point. He sends Zucco and some boys to make sure there isn't any trouble at the circus.
Batman shows up after having dropped off his connection information to the police, who now have a motive for the Grayson murder and a likely suspect. Robin is just leaving, and Batman stops him. "Who the hell are you supposed to be?" he says, hauling the boy up off the ground by his tuinic.
"You!" says Robin, which gives Batman some pause. "Escalation indeed," Batman says to himself. Gunfire erupts as Zucco and his boys arrive and try to kill anything in a mask. Both herpes dive for cover and Batman tells Robin to stay put. "Like hell," Dick says and circles around the other side. Things wind up with Robin having a gun on Zucco, having heard him confess to killing the Graysons. There is tension, there is shouted discussion between him and Batman but in the end he choose the right thing and leaves Zucco for the cops. They leave and are standing on a ledge overlooking the city.
"I guess this was it for me," Robin says, taking off his mask. "Heh. I have no idea how I'll explain where I've been to Mr Wayne." Batman pulls back his cowl. "I think he'll understand. And I certainly don't think it's the end for Robin....if you learn some damn patience."
Banter follows, movie ends.
