[?] Battlestar Galactica the board game

We had a good time playing a game of this at Gencon and I hope to get to play with the Pegasus expansion someday.

Your first game will probably take a long time, 2 to 3 hours as you get used to the game and components. However, once you get used to the flow of the game (with all the symbols, the components, and order of operations), it actually is very straightforward.

First time I played, it took about 5 or 6 hours. With practice, it got down to 4 hours. Playing the expansion last night with 4 players who have played the regular game multiple times but the expansion only once or not at all, it took about 5 hours, I think.

It's kinda hard to imagine the game being any less than 3.5-4 hours, but then again, the people I play (well, and me especially) like to discuss strategy and lightly roleplay. But the fun is in the social aspect, IMO, so I wouldn't want to play it more straightforwardly without all the Cylon accusations and what not.

And, for the first time, the humans actually won, despite both of us at one time thinking the other was a cylon and yanking the admiralty back and forth. We had one cylon, two humans, and one sympathetic Cylon Leader. The Cylon Leader's objective was to have the humans win with all resources at 3 or less. Alas, two of them were at four, so only the two human players one.

Totally different playstyles! We started one evening at 7:30ish and finished up our second game right at midnight. That averaged us 2:15 a game.

We like to discuss strategy and make accusations too, but we still end up finishing in a little over 2 hours most of the time.

We just got Pegasus, so we'll see how that works out.

I played this for the first time last month and really enjoyed it.

What I like most that hasn't been mentioned is the tension of the game. I've watched or been around several games and in each and every one the Humans have been staring at the board saying "we're screwed, we're screwed, we're screwed..." but when you come back an hour later they're still hanging in there, still muttering "We're screwed, we're screwed!" to themselves. It seems a very balanced and interesting game.

I suck at disguising myself - due to a rules mix-up I revealed myself as a Cylon when it wasn't my turn and then spent four rounds watching everyone screw my character over... still, I enjoyed it immensely.

The first time I played it, I was Gaius Baltar and checked one of the players. He said something along the lines of, "[Bleep]!" which made it pretty obvious he was the (only) cylon to everyone else. :D

We had a great game where Gaius checked another player and announced that player wasn't a cylon. Of course, Gaius was a Cylon himself, so he was telling the other player he was a cylon!

Cheers!

I've heard good things about it, but beyond, "It is a really good game, you'll like!" kind of responses I've been getting, could anyone here know a little more about the game? I think it is right up my alley but if anyone could add their views and examples of play I'd really appreciate it. :)

Battle Star Gallactica is a semi-cooperative game. The humans win by preserving the BSG, fuel, food, morale, population and reaching earth. The Cylon players win if the human players run out of any resource above before reaching earth. For me, the fun part of the game for the human players is trying to avoid cylon attacks and to uncover the cylon spies onboard BSG (not an easy task against a good cylon player or terrible human players) ;). It's really a cool game. Try it! :)

As a person who plays BSG on a semi-regular basis, allow me to say it rocks! As long as you play with people who are smart/know what they're doing, you're gonna enjoy it. And remember, when you ask someone if they're a Cylon and they say "I'm not a Cylon" they're obviously a Cylon.
