D&D 5E Best Class and Why???

Picking just one class is tough. As someone who has had to DM, and admittedly wanted to, for time immemorial I haven't played a PC for a long time. Because of this I often find myself dreaming up character after character coming up with race, class, background (of both the mechanical variety, but also their actual backstory) and all the other little details... fantasizing about the day I'll get to play any of them. :p

Because of this I have no one favorite class or race. But that's not what this thread is about so let's put a metaphorical gun to my head...

Cleric probably takes my top spot because as a "real world" atheist I've always found exploring the idea of faith in a higher being interesting. My first ever character back in 2e was a cleric and to this day cleric remains my most played class

That said, Warlock is a new and strong contender. I like the seemingly endless stories you can weave around having an otherworldly patron. Who is your pact with? Were you tricked into it or did you sign on the dotted line willingly? What lead you down this road to begin with? The things to consider go on and on. And in this edition in particular, from a mechanical perspective, the Warlock is basically "build your own class" because of how modular it is, something the upcoming Mystic also shares and which I'm looking forward to.

Anyway, that's about it. I love all the classes and I've constructed an endless stream of characters in my head using all of them, but right now those two stand a little taller than the others in my mind.

Whatever one I happen to be playing at the time.

At the moment it is Half-Elf Monk of the Old Order practicing the Way of the Open Hand in one campaign and a Human (non-variant) strength-based Fighter (Battlemaster) with Great Weapon Fighting and the Sentinel feat.

I also have a Half-Elf Lore Bard that I very much enjoy playing.

My favorite classes are clerics and paladins. I enjoy the religious aspects (my paladins all get powers from deities, like they should!) and I have always been drawn to support type characters.

My favorite class to play, mechanically, is a Monk, with Warlock being a close second. I like the flexibility of the monk, and how many things it can accomplish. Mobile, not the worst damage, unarmored AC, so I don't have to arm up in combat. Warlock is also super flexible, allowing me to mesh it with pretty much any concept.

My favorite Flavor class is Warlock. None of the other classes pop out to me as standing above the others in flavor, so I don't have a list beyond that. Warlock has great fluff, especially if you approach it with the thought that they don't have to be Evil, nor do their patrons. So much room for customization to my story, rather than a story someone else wrote into the class.

Lanliss saved me some typing.

One of the things I love about Warlock is the multiple options for customization, but in a fairly committing way. (Contrast with Wizard, where you can pretty much change your character concept every long rest.)

Same here. I know that sounds a bit dismissive, but let me explain. I DM most of the time, so by the time I get a chance to play, I usually have two or three PCs that I really want to play but only get to play one. Secondly, I go through cycles on just about everything: Music, entertainment, etc. And each cycle lasts a couple months. For example, I might really like to play video games for a few months, but then go an entire year without really wanting to play any. I might be on a big 80s techo music kick for a couple months, then listen to classical. So I don't really have a favorite, because my desire will change every few months. I will say that I am not a fan of bards or wild mages, so I never play those.

I think my favorite PCs of all time have been a halfling f/t, human fighter, human paladin using 2e Player's Options, 5e human shadow monk, and 1e ninja. I'm becoming very fond of my 5e barbarian4/druid2 though.

Best class is Wizard, they can do just about anything. Abjuration specialists are REALLY tough to kill, especially with magic, and able to dispel a lot of stuff. At 18th level they can cast a 1st and 2nd level at will, which means Shield every round! But really they can tool up for fighting or pretty much any out of combat role needed given just a little time to prep. Given contingency, clone, simulacrum, mind jar just to name a few their survivability is limited only by their paranoia and patience. Plus you can summon demons and stuff, travel to other planes, inquire about anything giving the DM the perfect excuse to start adventures, you name it.

Which isn't to say I'm not also a HUGE fan of rogues, shadow monks(any monk really), and bards, they are all just so damn versatile and useful. But really any class is the best class if you enjoy playing it.

I'm a fan of jack-of-all-trades, swiss army knife classes that can do a little bit of everything. I also favor classes that require Intelligence, because I find it more fun to roleplay. That being said

2e: Skills & Power Cleric. You could build this class to be pretty much anything. Too much fun.
3e: Druid. Because it could do everything. Also, Ultimate Magus (because no said it had to be a base class!). Double arcane progression is great.
4e: Swordmage. Versatile, tricky defender. Also made a darn good hybrid.
5e: Sorlock. Two fun classes that are even more fun in combination. The uber versatility of bards makes them my other favorite.

I can't really pick favorites but over the years I have mostly found myself wanting to play either a Fighter or a Wizard, opposite ends of the spectrum but I kinda like them equally. I liked the cleric but they kinda got too smashy in appearance for me to prefer them, and it always seems like someone else already wants to play one.

I don't really want to play Bards or Monks, but I like the classes a lot in 5e and I love if my players pick them.
