Best non-WotC Base Classes?

Anybody got a link? Hong has come up twice.
Ooh, more pimpage!

In addition to the thread that Nifft linked, check out the sig. Also, be aware that these are _villain_ classes, ie meant for use as opponents, not for player characters.

Not easy, as you allow including Arcane Evolved and similar sources.

I love the AE Akashic class, even though I never got around playing it. But it allows a character concept I always wanted, and it is neatly done with interesting flavour.
And the IH Man-at-Arms class is great, too. Because it is the ultimately flexible class - you can get anything at least in the Iron Heroes context - magic using would be hard with that class)

The Akashic sounds interesting in name alone. Could you give a brief summary of what the class is?

Also, are most of the AE classes a fairly nice fit with 3.X?

Some guy with a screenname "Monte" did a bit of a writeup.

3.5e could accept all and any Arcana Evolved classes, so long as the magic systems are kept separate.

Anyone ever had a problem using the non-magic AE classes in regular D&D?

Follow-up: how hard would the AE spellcasters be to adapt?

I'm asking because I may be running D&D soon.

You, too? Kewl! Hope you're not as nervous as I am. :o

Going back to your post, the major antagonists for the PCs are NPCs, not monsters. I plan to use non-core classes such as that Spellsage(?) from ToB:Bo9S (WotC); variant bard from Complete Book of Eldritch Might (Malhavoc); and the martial artist from Beyond the Monk (Goodman Games/Chainmail Bikini). Haven't decided yet what spell-caster to use. Any recommendations?

Mage (from Elements of Magic) and Green Ronin's Shaman and Witch seem to be the winners so far in this thread.

If you have the relevant WotC book, people seem to love the Warlock. I don't know what it does, is there a 3rd party equivalent anywhere?
