Alexander: Went in expecting a potrayal of the greatest conqueror in history. Wanted some cool depictions of his battles and his empire building. All I got was a lot of scenes depicting angst, tears, and deep jealous stares :\
The Last Samurai: I stopped going to movies expecting historical depictions. Also, people don't want to see elitist samurais. They want to see cool fighters that kick some ass. This move completely delivered in that sense. The fight scenes were good, the characters were entertaining, and the plot worked. I liked it.
King Arthur: The movie was fun, but not realistic. But since I don't care about realism in my movies (I play fantasy role playing games
) I found this movie entertaining. And since I sincerely believe that history isn't really a recollection of facts, but just the accepted version of whoemever the victor was, I have no problem wuith viewing this alternate version.
Troy: I think it rocked. Good combat scenes. I loved the Achilles/Hector fight. I also liked the fact that they decided to remove the "fantastical" and try to explain how someone could become a legend. The only thing that grates on me is the: "we ship out on Tuesday to Troy, we'll be coming back on Sunday". The movie could have easily have been portayed as in having a Siege (The Ajax battle at the walls), a surprise Sally (the Hector Patroclus combat at the beach) and the Duel (Achilles/Hector) spaced out over months or even years. The 10 years of war in Homer Illiad seems an exageration to me, the same as Methuselah age in the old testament .
