Best way to kill a dragon?

sorry

I don't think you'll win.

I suggest you look at Jeremy's post with the dragon stats again.

Poison won't work since his Fort save is so high.
Most spells won't work since his SR is so high.
Melee Combat? His AC is 39. All his attack bonuses are in the forties. He can use power attack.
Distance Combat: Breath Weapon, Offensive Spells
Magic: He can cast spell turning, improved invisibility, endure elements, harm, haste and heal. He can most of these on himself in advance.
Immunities: Fire...If I was the dragon, I'd set the whole place on fire. Sucks not to be immune to fire!
Senses: Has super-keen senses, high spot and listen. It would be easier to sneak in and out of a thieves' guild.
Weaknesses: Cold, low Dex and Init. (sneak attack), The SR and endure elements will mostly negate any cold spells though

And a highly intelligent, ancient red dragon that's defending his life WILL use all of the above tactics and spells and MORE. Otherwise, how'd he live that long?

Either don't fight him or start rolling up a new character....

Yeah things don't look to great. HEHE, welp I'm about done with this thread I think I've got enough tactics to be able to have about a 5% chance (if he rolls 1 on the disenegrate save) well, that is if I get passed the SR, hehehe. anyways. Thanks to everyone who ACTUALLY posted good tactics instead of bashing me and my DM. I really appreciate your support as opposed to your negativety. I hope in the future you negative people will come to terms with ur inner deamons and actually try to be helpfull to people instead of releasing your severe depression and hatred on others. Thanks again

Folks, please watch the language. We don't need to get nasty, and we don't need to get around the profanity filters with funky spellings, kay?

I read through this, and noticed a few interesting things.
Number one: A red dragon has more SR than you can honestly hope to deal with, and he's going to rip you a new corn-chute.
Number two: You're going in there blind.

OK, IF you make it into the lair to confront the great wyrm, now you have a chance.
Two spells, right off the bat. Greater Mirror Image, and an illusion (preerable a greater one) that will bring up the illusion of a few comrades. Don't forget to include a paladin in Dragonslayer armor with a greatsword.
Do NOT attack our dragon directly. Use polymorph object to turn the gold it's laying on to magnesium. Turn the silver to liquid chlorine. Use disintigrate to tear off large chunks of the roof to assault the dragon with (spell resistance won't help against a falling stalagtite). To be a real pain in it's ass, turn the copper to mercury.
Animate Object spells on any weapons or armor lying about in the horde. Animate Dead if you have time, hit the burnt and fried corpses all around the lair with them, that will give you niusances to buy you more time with.

Now... hit hard, hit fast, keep up the pressure. If you try to go melee, she WILL hurt you, and hurt you very badly. She WILL kill you. Melee, or hitting her directly with spells, and you will burst right into flame. Keep on her, don't let up. Subdual if you can get it, physical if you can.
Use wall spells (wall of force, wall of ice, ect) to divert and redirect her breath weapons, use imrror spells to redirect her spells.

Do NOT directly attack her, but stay on it, hard and fast, do NOT let up the pressure. If she gets the slightest chance, she will turn you into a pile of cinders. Stay on it. You can get get

Um . . . how are these Illusions going to be helping, again? The Dragon has Blindsight.

And just out of curiousity, why wouldn't DR help against falling stalagtites? (And it'd have to be one HELL of a big stalagtite to hurt a dragon of that size -- hell, how is it going to pierce its armor?)

Try again....

OK, first things first.
If your DM plays this dragon right, I have to agree with everyone else, you're a dead PC.

Now, these illusions are just for visual. Yes, the dragon is immune to it due to Blindsite, but there are ways to confuse the dragon. Make the illusions appear like someone half on the Astral or Etheral plane, and back it up with spells that strike from the Astral/Ethereal plane. (I forgot that part earlier).
Now, I'm thinking of an Epic dragon cave, with stalagtites the size of Greyhound buses (remember in the Crystal Shard, the white worm, and the stalagtite and Wulfgar's hammer?). Hell, we're not talking an instant kill, just keep plugging. In this fight, every singe advantage you can get will help.
now, with Arcane Trickster, and Sneak Attack, GO FOR THE EYES! Blind her, then nail her to the wall. Use wall spells to hinder her flight.
If she is in the nastiest place imaginable, which will be the bowels of a semi-dormant volcano, complete with pools of lava, and things her husband would have found asthetically pleasing (Columns of lightling from minerals with differentail charges, ect), try to use those for an advantage, because, boyo, you're gonna need all the help you can get.
A chunk of rock the size of a Greyhound bus will at least slam her into the ground, or knock her off course.
Now, she has blindsight, and enhanced weapons. Hopefully we have Tome and Blood and Relics and Rituals. Pillar of Magnetism, Iron Storm, Cloud of Knives, ect. Fight hard, fight dirty.
Turn the gold to acid, turn a stalagtite to steel, the wieght will drop it, turn the silver to a venom you are familiar with, summon up allies.
You have Evasion and Improved Evasion thanks to that item, use it. Make sure you have cover constantly, use blink to hopefully help you, summon elementals to help you, pray for divine intervention to augment your casting.
It can be done, IF you can make it into your foes lair without a doormat or ashtray eating you for lunch. You will have to fight smart and hard, know when to temporarily back off, then come rolling back when she thinks you left. Use her hoard against her, try to turn her terrian against her. If your DM is feeling particularly generous, he might allow you to use energy admixture on the lava in her lair, mixing it with ice and filling the place with steam.
In addition to you spells, bring along a grapnel launcher. A rope that is mystically hardened against magic, on the grapnel. When she opens her big yap, fire that grapnel down her throat, and follow it up with a lightning bolt into the rope, kick the rope around a pillar and that might help. (Who knows, it might work)
One thing, you never know about, is individual idiosycracies. I have a bad feeling that after shaking up and bumping really uglies with a blue dragon, she's going to be immune to lightning.
Luckily for you, you are playing in (Thankfully) Forgotten Realms, so that will give you and advantage.
Last note, let me repeat: do NOT attempt to directly affect her with your spells, her SR is too big to risk penetration. Instead, use the terrian against her. She is a BIG wyrm, as was her mate, so that is going to be a LARGE cavern, with room for them to fly, mate, have lunch, entertain in-laws, roast salesmen, ect. That cavern is going to be HUGE, probably a 100-300' cieling, and a 1100' raidus. Pillars, pools of fire, crackling columns of energy, and if you are lucky, extremely lucky, there will be a clutch of eggs. If so, burn the damn things to flinders and bug out when she totally loses it. You will have vengeance for your friend, and an immortal enemy for life.

Personally, I firmly believe you should teleport in, make fun of her genetalia, get out, and call it even, just like someone else said.

But then, go for it, this is the kinds of stuff we play the game for.

Poison...

Poison: I think the MotW says, that progression per week for poison is in gp, not the normal craft sp...

Encounter: The DMG does not list an XP award for this encounter, because "something must have gone wrong if you win" (and this is meant for FOUR character...)... The last time we fought against a too powerfull enemy with a SR I could not overcome, we abandoned magic and changed our tactics to melee... But I think you do not have that option...

Power up suite: If you are powered by maaaaany spells and sitting with ghost form in a wall an come out to atta - *READY ACTION: the red dragon casts dispel magic*... Do not forget this possibility! If this happens, you need something like dimension door or teleport!!!! So save at least one slot for non-combat spells...

Summoned Creatures: Most likely the dragon will ignore them, because YOU are the thread. Not a Hound Archon or something... You will still have them for your sneak attack, but you might be the only one to face his attacks. AND he (or she?) flies! So summoned creatures not able to fly won't help (like the tentacles you wanted to cast to grapple the dragon).

You should keep this in mind and have something to deal with it...

(I think) best idea: Death Spells. Saves are subject to critical misses and successes - so you have a 5% chance that he just dies with every spell you cast at him! If he's immune to death effects... WEEELLL... Polymorph him into a fish. 5% chance - I think it's the best you have if you REALLY want to fight now...
