Big, 2 handed Mauls or Bludgeoning Weapons ?

Creamsteak,

That's the hand-and-a-half exotic weapon combined with the monkey grip feat, right?

Yeah, my primary curiosity is just if the slightly lower damage dice was a mechanical concern or just tradition. (Mercifully, an enlarged greatclub wielder does a mite better in 3.5. I always found that irritating.)

Thanks.
Erm, no. Monkey grip in 3.5 would allow you to weild a large one-handed weapon one-handed for a medium sized character. The -2 penalty is simply for using ANY miss-sized weapon.

Medium Warmace = two-handed (small) -2 penalty/one handed (medium)
Large Warmace = one handed (large)/two-handed (medium) -2 penalty

Monkey grip changes the "two-handed" to "one handed."

Edit:

In theory, a 3d6 bludgeoning weapon does exist if the warmace is allowed in your game. It would suffer the warmaces -1 AC penalty, and would cost the same as a large warmace, but if made specifically for a medium sized character, it would not suffer a -2 penalty. It would still be considered exotic. Of course, if you follow this theory, the fullblade (2d8 large bastardsword) also exists, but requires an exotic proficiency.

What exactly is the reason that 2 handed, martial, bludgeoning weapons don't have a 2d6 damage dice?

The unimproved crit multiplier and threat range would seem to make that a no brainer.

Is there are mechanical reasoning beyond price and effectiveness against undead? Am I drastically underestimating said value?

The only reason I can think of is to have the "Stupid" bad guys (like ettins, ogres and hill giants?) do less damage to you because they are hitting you with really big clubs instead of really big swords and axes.

Frankly, I don't like the inequality between the greataxe and the greatsword, either.

If you don't like that reason, I suggest making twin weapons to the greatsword (2d6 damage) only have slashing or bludgeonings ones have a x3 crit, not a 19-20/x2 crit.

The other option is to have all 3 weapons do 1d12 damage.

Get a half-ogre druid, give him a quarterstaff built for huge people, drop the half-dragon template on him and use Shillelagh.

Guess that would be a nice big bludgeoning weapon.

Most of the 3.5 and 3.0 books have almost no 2 handed Bludgeoning weapons. I found the Maul (exotic 1 hand) only.

Any dragons or Books have "different" weapons ? Especially big ones ? Making a new character for a Warcraft campaign and those big hammer/mauls sure look neat. :)

The Heavy Flail is a great two handed bludgeoning weapon in the base PHB, very underrated.

The annoying thing is, I've always seen flails as the kind of thing a berserker/slightly less than intelligent strong man type would use, but they require 13 Int to use to their full potential. Argh.

I think that there is a maul in Complete Warrior too, I'm not sure whether or not it's the same as the above mentioned FR maul. There's also one in the fan created Dark Sun 3.5 conversion at Athas.org. Again, I don't know if the stats are the same as the other sources.
