For what it's worth, I thought we might have heard something more today as well. I didn't expect spoilers regarding upcoming product, but I had hoped for information about the place of the Gen Con games within the greater structure of a future organized play campaign. While there was no such announcement, we can gain some information from the postings.

1. These games, even the one hour events, are meant to be played with unique characters; materials are not provided.
2. The RPGA still exists-- at least in some form.

Though not spelled out, I suspect that these games are indeed intended to kick off the new organized play offering from WotC. It also certainly seems like the kickoff is closely tied to the Tyranny of Dragons. Also, the one hour adventure slot is supposed to have five possible adventures. The description also mentions five factions. My guess is that this is intended to introduce new characters to factions which they can choose to join for the campaign.

Any related thoughts or ideas?

thanks for the info.

Something about this did not sit right, so I did some digging around. Just FYI, from the Gen Con forums:

On all of the RPGA events this is listed: Materials Provided: No, materials are not provided for this game. You must bring your own. Seeing as how the game doesn't actually exist for sale yet, Just what do we need to bring to one of these should we choose to play? I noticed someone mentioned characters were available as pre-gens last year. Is this the case?

It said the same thing last year but everything was provided. I would bring dice and something to write with.

According to the website, membership is still required for Living Forgotten Realms judges.

An interesting theory, but five is also a nice round number.

The RPGA exists, I expect, because no one has bothered to change the category name with GenCon. No membership is needed to run LFR adventures, and membership has merged with DCI membership to create the Wizards Play Network - which only has a function of tracking play in game stores and Magic tournaments.

I'd quite like Wizards to resurrect the RPGA brand, but it really doesn't mean anything any more, and its use or otherwise doesn't give us any info about a future large scale campaign, from what I can tell.
