D&D 5E Blade Pact and Sentient/Artifact Weapons

Mearls thinks Artifact Weapons are two powerful to be modified by the Pact Weapon feature, which tbh I can't actually see coming up that often anyway. It is still a bit of a shame your Bladelock can't use a Artifact Greatsword with proficiency though.

mearls ruined pact blade warlocks . . . but not in my game. There will absolutely be a soul-sucking, intelligent greatsword looking for a fiend-friendly warlock to dominate, er, um befriend. :D

I kinda want to play a blade lock who makes a pact with his weapon.
That... is brilliant!

And why not? Patrons are not gods, they're just extremely powerful beings. An artefact, IMO, qualifies. Artefacts tend to have been around for millennia, know all sorts of esoteric history and no doubt have divine or arcane knowledge that few beings would possess. Assuming it's an intelligent artefact, of course.

Hell, I could even see a first level warlock starting with an artefact pact blade. It would start as being mundane with no power, and the warlock may not even realise the pact they have is with the blade they wield, but as the power of the character grows so does the power of the blade. A symbiotic relationship.

That actually sounds really cool. I think I'll make a subclass.

My actual idea was to play the weapon itself as my character, and blame all my bad rolls on the moron level 1 fighter who picked me up and got dominated.

"Well, the plan was to run over and chop off the goblin's head, but (I rolled a 1 so) Tim here swung me too soon and wedged me into a wall. Freaking Tim."

That... is an even brillianter idea!
