Blocking Fireballs

There is no prohibition in the rules that would prevent you from trying to intercept a spell (if there is something to intercept, like the fireball bead).

Of course, you'd have to ready an action to do this, so it won't happen often (I ready an action to step up and take the damage from the next spell myself - I can't see that happening too often.)

Anyway - the mechanics of how to do this are tricky - I guess the "strike an object" rules would apply, with appropriate AC bonus for really, really tiny things. A bonus to AC for being small AND moving fast is appropriate, too. That said, you are only trying to touch it, really - no need for any damage.

A valid tactic, I think, with a reasonable chance for success. I'd allow a bonus of some sort (+2 circumstance bonus?) if you have spellcraft and recognize the spell being cast. Otherwise you are just trying to gauge what the caster is doing and jump in the way at the last minute. Reasonable and allowable by the rules, I think, though heavy DM adjudication is required.

I view it like this:

Spellcaster starts to cast.
Nothing happens yet.
Spellcaster selects target and casts spell.
Just an instant before that, but too late to change the target, the PC jumps into the line of effect.

Possible. Some sort of skill roll should be used to pick the right spot. Spellcraft would work for this, and maybe that's the best way to go.

Just a few thoughts on this topic. I'm sure you'll let me know what you think.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you aren't forced to take an AoO if it's presented to you. So why couldn't the monster just hold onto it until the spell caster provoked one of his own? Assuming he doesn't cast on the defensive anyways.

Oh, we had that discussion too. The question is-why would the monster decide not to take the opportunity when it presented itself? Yes, there might be reasons, especially if the monster had seen me use the tactic before-but we rarely leave monsters alive ... DM: "Make your Tumble check." Me: "I'm not trying to tumble-I'm just moving around him." DM: (glaring) "I know what you're trying to do." Me: "I know you know-but does the monster?" DM: "Someday, you'll be up against something with Combat Reflexes. That'll learn ya'." :D
