Bonus Spells

Does anyone know the formula to derive how many bonus spells someone gets for have x modifier in their stat?

The reason I ask is that I have a wizard with a 23 mod in int and I'm trying to figure out how many bonus spells he'd have

Bonus Spells(level) = max(0, int((mod-level)/4)+1)

Edit: Bleah. Beaten. I figured out why what I had written wasn't working though. Forgot to actually round down with fractions.

Why not just look at the chart in the PH on page 8. Much easier than using that formula.

I don't use the chart b/c it doesn't go up to a 23 mod

Of course it's equivalent, but I prefer this because it takes the "modifier" out of the equation (round down as always):

(ability - (spellLevel+1)*2) / 8,
assuming they can cast that level in the first place.

How are you getting your Int that high?
