Book of Exalted Deeds Excerpts up

Can you tell us how many of the monsters/creatures are converted old archons/eladrins/guardinals? And how many are other things?

that's what i want to see. :D and a list of monsters appearing, as well as "celestial lords" like the already mentioned Talisid.

There isn't much interesting about the Rhek unless you're a PS fan, but the Harmonium is generally my least favourite faction due to my dislike of their real world counterparts.

With the Lion of Talisid and the mention Emmissary of Barachiel prestige class we get counterparts to the Thrall of Demogorgon and Disciple of Asmodeus classes. I'm guessing all the prestige classes centred around the Tome Archons are called Emmissaries, and the Guardinal prestige classes are probably named after the respective animal so we might get others such as the Bear of Callisto (the Ursinal Lord, providing that they stat Ursinals) and Eagle of Windheir (the Avoral Lord). No idea if there's any based on the Eladrins, but seeing as Queen Morwel is based on a typical name from Faerie mythology and the like (if there's other Eladrin lords they probably have names like Princess Fiona and Queen Mab), there might be a class like the Champion of Queen Morwel (since it sounds like it fits).

One problem I had with the BOVD was the fact that their were too many spells listed as [evil] that I thought really weren't that evil. Cheat is one immediate example along with Sorrow (is it really more evil than Crushing Despair). At least the spells in the excerpt seem a little more consistent with spells used by the forces of good.

Another thing is that if there are races like the Vashar and Jerran that they at least try to make them statistically different from Humans and Halflings.

It will be interesting to see how this compares to my book Anger of Angels (Malhavoc Press), which also discusses celestial influences and good vs. evil. I've already noticed some similar elements in the preview (for example, the exalted arcanist gets access to some Good cleric spells as arcane spells, as do aasimar sorcerers who take the AOA feat Celestial Sorcery, reflecting their celestial-derived power).

Actually Sean I'm more curious to compare this book to Book of Hallowed Might...but adding in Anger of Angels to that list...might be cool. In terms of how both books compare to each other.

But Darrin, I will say I'm heartily impressed by the efforts on this book. I look forward to adding it to my collection.

The peace-lover is an archetype that really doesn't work well in most D&D games. Irrespective of whether the AoP works or not (we'll see in two weeks when the book comes out), I'm glad they're taking a shot at making such characters workable in mainstream games.

I am really looking forward to this one!

Agreed on both points. I've got a pacifist Rogue. I really designed him to be a total non-caster, but I might have to look at the AoP.

He's a pain to play sometimes. Really, the only way to do it is with a DM who gives story/problem/rp awards more than "beating things into pulp" awards. Of course, I play him so that undead and evil incarnations (fiends) aren't covered by the pacifism, so he can occasionally get some action.

Isn't turning up when your name is spoken more the halmark of fiends than someone who should be working on the BoED?

The ONLY difference is the color of the light in the summoning aura... :)

I too will be interested to see if someone takes the challenge of Pacifism in a D&D game after this book. Every time someone has suggested it, the usual outcry in my group has been dread and derision... "Great, now we have to take PRISONERS," or "I swear the first time he tells me I can't kill the enemy, it's not going to be the enemy I'm aiming at..." :)
