I'm with Jarval on this one. While the Book of Vile Darkness looks like it will contain a few game mechanics that might prove interesting to implement in a campaign, I just don't see myself buying it for that reason alone. I know that the controversy of this book has been bandied back and forth on these forums for a while now, but I'm decidedly in the camp that feels that this book is, by and large, wholly unnecessary.
I understand that people want to touch upon these "taboo" issues in their game (rape, slavery, human sacrifice, and the rest of your generic moral dilemmas), but I don't think we need a book on it. I find the idea kind of macabre, which is obviously the whole point of the matter. I too have been known to use eviiiiilllll in my games from time to time. However, I just don't think I need a book on my shelf that's sole dedication is to cultivate evil in your game.
I guess it comes down to this; something like rape is an issue that I'm probably not going to touch with a ten-foot pole in my games. I've dealt with rape victims as a part of what I do in real life and it's not a fun experience. It's not something I'm comfortable depicting in a game, and it sure as hell is something I'm not ever going to purchase as a game supplement. Call me what you will, but I think that some things are still taboo and I'm content to respect that.
And of course, this is nothing to say of the speculation that the Book of Vile Darkness is intentionally trying to push buttons in the hopes of raising sales for the game. If that is true, and we'll never really know, then I'm even more opposed to this item than on general principles alone. I'm not a big fan of marketing ploys like that. Controversy as an ad campaign sucks.
Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread. I know that there are other, more appropriate threads to voice my opinion in, but this was the one I opened.
