Probably not, although one or two of the rules ideas sound interesting. But I do like the idea of a Book of Exulted Deeds.

I'm with Jarval on this one. While the Book of Vile Darkness looks like it will contain a few game mechanics that might prove interesting to implement in a campaign, I just don't see myself buying it for that reason alone. I know that the controversy of this book has been bandied back and forth on these forums for a while now, but I'm decidedly in the camp that feels that this book is, by and large, wholly unnecessary.

I understand that people want to touch upon these "taboo" issues in their game (rape, slavery, human sacrifice, and the rest of your generic moral dilemmas), but I don't think we need a book on it. I find the idea kind of macabre, which is obviously the whole point of the matter. I too have been known to use eviiiiilllll in my games from time to time. However, I just don't think I need a book on my shelf that's sole dedication is to cultivate evil in your game.

I guess it comes down to this; something like rape is an issue that I'm probably not going to touch with a ten-foot pole in my games. I've dealt with rape victims as a part of what I do in real life and it's not a fun experience. It's not something I'm comfortable depicting in a game, and it sure as hell is something I'm not ever going to purchase as a game supplement. Call me what you will, but I think that some things are still taboo and I'm content to respect that.

And of course, this is nothing to say of the speculation that the Book of Vile Darkness is intentionally trying to push buttons in the hopes of raising sales for the game. If that is true, and we'll never really know, then I'm even more opposed to this item than on general principles alone. I'm not a big fan of marketing ploys like that. Controversy as an ad campaign sucks.

Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread. I know that there are other, more appropriate threads to voice my opinion in, but this was the one I opened.

I'm going to buy it. Personally, I think most people will actually read it and find the subject matter tame. I think the hype and all this so called controversy was over done and in the end the book will be marginially on the vile side.

I voted no, mostly because I have no money to spare at the moment, but also because I'm not particularly interested in it based on the sealed section in Dragon. Not because I was offended, simply because I thought it wasn't very interesting to me.

*shrug*

Them's the breaks, sometimes.

I'll buy it, most likely.

Heh. Even if the rest of the book didn't interest me, I'd still buy it for the demon lords...

Man, 161 page views and only 50 votes.

I would think this poll would be PACKED with votes already -- are people really that undecided that they can't even choose "undecided"? :p

No!

Even though Monte has assured us that rape and prostitution won't be covered in the book, I still really don't want to buy it. With Rpg books costing $25+ dollars, I really don't have the money to buy everything. Frankly, the idea of the book doesn't really appeal to me. I really don't need another hardcover book, just to tell me how to make villians. Plus, my campaigns don't tend to be all that dark or vile, so the idea of "vile darkness" really doesn't appeal to me.
