I would think this poll would be PACKED with votes already -- are people really that undecided that they can't even choose "undecided"? :p

Well, Undecided is a bit bland.
No way to indicate "leanings".

For myself, I checked undecided.
What that means for me is, most likely no, but I'll look through it to see if there's enough in there to justify a purchase.

There's also "never judge a book by it's cover", but darn, what will the little old lady at the bookstore counter think when I purchase the Book of Vile Darkness...

I am going to go out and get it. I am a big fan of Monte and think it will be a very good book. I don't really need help creating evil at all, but would like to see some of the many cruchies that are in the book.
Also if there wasn't some demand for the book they wouldn't actually be publishing it, so if they are then there is. This may go against some peoples ideas, but lately Hasbro/WotC is seeming to do that a lot.

Seem to have the same problem in my poll, 26 views only 5 votes? What's with people, are they afraid to express an opinion?

I think some people are taking "lurking" too far. My only guess is they aren't registered users.

I'll wait and see.

If it contains good info on the Demon Lords and their cults/dogma (and not just a MM for gods like D&DG and F&P was) I might buy it.

If the "vile" section of you know what number of you know what magazine is any indicator of the content, then No, I won't buy it simply because I thought that was just really poor material..regardless of it being "vile" or not.

Don't need a "DM's Toolkit" to create memorable villains. I can do that on my own.

Here is a quote by Monte Cook that I found while perusing Sean Reynolds' forums, and I think its applicable in this thread. His post was directed at another post that is similar to the one above:

That's fine. I believe in buying books you need, rather than just whatever comes out. That said, your statement makes it seem like people who want the book are stupid. Like they couldn't come up with villains are their own. Could the people who bought the Monster Manual not come up with monsters on their own? Could the people who bought Tome and Blood not come up with material for their wizard characters on their own?

When a publisher puts out a book, it's not meant to be an insult to the people who buy it. When I put out, the Banewarrens, for example, I wasnt' trying to say "here, this is for all you people too dumb to make an adventure on your own."

Actually about half way through working on the City of the Spider Queen adventure James Wyatt said he got access to the BoVD and used somethings from it.
I am not sure if it is specific things or just general ideas, but if he thought is was good then I am all for it.

I'll get it for my collection, regardless of how much I like it. It may be a good book, or it may be a bad one... nobody will know until they read it. I'll give it a read and see what I think. If I like it, I'll use it. If not, it goes to the shelf. If I find that it causes me to question my own moral values and is undermining my faith just by being on my bookshelf... I'll sell it on ebay.

I find it kind of funny that folks can judge this book based on the limited information provided thus far. What is that line about not juding books by their covers? I think it applies here. Many of the folks who are saying they will not buy the book are citing acts of vileness that are not even included in the book. Do yourself a favor. Hold off on passing judgement... give it 10 minutes of (open minded) reading once it hits the shelves, and if you still feel the same way then hate it. An informed opinion is a much more respecatble thing than an uninformed one.

I voted no, and I probably won't buy it as I have lots of stuff from other books & personal writing that I have yet to try. But if my players are itching for it, or if I read lots of really good reviews, then I'll probably break the piggy bank for it...
