Boom?

I get burst: It's like a grenade that either starts at you (and you aren't affected) or at a square within range (and that square is affected).

I also get blast*: You are along any part of side of the area (including its corner).

*Kinda, because all the powers say "close" blast. My question:

Is there any other kind of blast yet?

This is the #1 conundrum my group is always debating, so I made a sign.

Why couldn't they just say "Blast" and if the wanted to do "Ranged Blasts" later on just use that term?

Heya,

Arcane Reach (Feat, pg. 202) lets you change the normal rules for a Close Blast. Presumably other abilities will do the same in time.

I really don't see the benefit of adding another attack type variant.

I think it has to do with the provoking rules. It's easier to say that all powers with the "close" range do not provoke OAs.

I half expected a thread like this to be troll free, but apparently that is too much to ask.

Why was it necessary to chime in like that? Was his question somehow harming you or were you just jealous that the rest of us have found an edition of D&D we finally enjoy?

Kinds of attacks:
Melee attacks: Don't provoke

Close attacks: Don't provoke

Ranged attacks: Provoke

Kinds of areas:

Burst

Blast

Wall

So you can have Close anything, and Ranged anything, but since the themes for the Blasts don't really fit well with being at ranged (until 4e Modern and you throw a Clamore at someone or something) there just don't happen to be any Ranged Blasts.

I'm just elaborating on what other people just said but it really would have changed the flow of information to include Blast as a Close only attack.

- thanks VanRichten that really helped.

What Clockwork Ninja said.

Close is a keyword with certain effects. One of which is that it doesn't provoke OA's. There are also powers (I believe, and if there aren't currently I'm sure there will be) that trigger off of "Close" attacks, or require you to use a "close" attack, or whatever.

The concept of a ranged blast is a bit weird too, when you think about it, which is probably why all the ranged attacks are burst rather than blast.

Because this is a rushed product. What did you expect?

If you think it is a troll, then don't feed it. Every post has a

icon.

"Blast" was a rushed patch because wotc had trouble designing Cones on the square grid of 4E D&D combat that worked the same when used diagonally. Cones were still in as recent as when the 2.0 DDM rules were finalized.
