[BoVD] Souls as Power

Ok, this is just a 'am i reading this right' question.

on BOVD pg. 33, it says that sould, "properly prepared and stored" can be used to make magic items etc... and that the BEST way to prepare a soul is to use a gem such as that used in soul bind or trap the soul or the spell imprison soul.

now, this suggests that there are other ways to prepare said soul. also, it says that larvae can be used "if properly prepared".

So are there other ways to prepare them? or is it just the three above spells, meaning that only a Wiz/Sor capable of 8th level spells or a Clr capable of 7th lvl spells can prepare said souls?

An if so, they're only worth 10xp?

I think it's Monte just leaving the possibility open for other spells from future products that might remove and incarcerate a soul.

Really, you're better off grabbing a live peasant and using the sacrifice rules - a minimum of 45 XP if you can make the DC 15 roll.

Sacrifice rules are in the BoVD, but one of the options lets you get 'Dark Craft XP' or 'Dark Craft GP' - they can be used for creating items, but not for levelling up or buying things.

yeah, but if you're steeling villagers for their souls anyway, then the risks are the same...
