Welcome to ENworld Connor.

I've deleted some of your additional threads since the same question was accidentally posted several times.

Your brother is going to start a campaign. Is he quite experienced with D&D? I only ask because if you are a novice it would be much easier to get to grips with it by conversation with your DM, and he can help you sort out appropriate characters too.

Regards,

Well, you'll probably have lots of luck here.
You might just want to ask your brother for help, in case he does anything special, or wants to help you create a character himself. (I dunno, I really liked helping my brother create his first character, but this won't always be true, etc.)
Anyway. What do you want them to do? Anybody you're trying to emulate, what's your idea for the character, etc?
For instance, if you were making a rogue, you could say "I want a sneaky guy who will avoid being seen by enemies until it's too late," or "I want a fast talking halfling who manages to get by through duping everyone," or "I want to be an ex-assassin who has reformed his ways and is trying to walk the straight and narrow path, but keeps slipping."
That sort of thing.
There's also "I want to be the best bowman in the world," or "I want to be able to scream, and then tear a bear's forelimbs off with one arm tied behind my back," or simply "I want to make things explode with my mind," or "I want to control armies of the undead..."

But if you just need stats...
Do you want the ranger to use two weapons or use a bow, or do both of those, or do something else?
Do you want the fighter to use a polearm, a sword and a shield, a two-handed sword, two swords, a bow, or something else?
Do you want to be good at special manuveurs, or just hit stuff?

Your best bet might just be to look in the player's handbook, look at the starter packages for the classes, and ask your brother to help you level them up to level 2. He might not be giving you normal amounts of gold for level 2, etc.

I hope at least part of this was helpful. If you just get a line for what you want out of your fighter and ranger, that might help things quite a bit. Stats are easy to chunk out, but it helps to have a tiny bit of direction, etc, other stuff... goodnight.

Hey Connor,

I just wanted to say Welcome to Enworld and D&D. I hope you enjoy it as much as we here have.

And on a character, I agree with the others that if your brother is willing to help you, it would be best. Hopefully he has experience with D&D and 3.0/3.5 since the character creation process is definately number heavy. Once you get the numbers the game runs smoothly, but the creation process can be rough for a new player.

Nonetheless, if you have any problems or questions, please ask.

Also, Terwox said, a concept of your character is very helpful in that process. You can either work from the past the the present (coming up with a good story and then thinking up what kind of class and skills your character would be) or figuring out what type of character sounds neat to play and then working backwards. At least, those are the two ways I do it.

Good luck with everything!

Your character needs the following:

A class - you've got that already: fighter or ranger
A race - you've got this already: human
Six ability scores - strength, dexterity, constitution, intelligence, wisdom and charisma. These are usually rolled on 4d6 for each, take the best 3 and assign as you choose. (Fighters need good strength and constitution scores).
Feats - A 2nd level human gets 2 feats. A 2nd level fighter gets 2 more bonus feats, for a total of 4. A 2nd level ranger gets Track and either Rapid Shot or Two-Weapon Fighting
Skills
Equipment

From the above you work out your hit points, armour class and saving throws and I think that's it.

You'll need the Players Handbook for this or you could use the online SRD.

Welcome to the boards!

If you have access to a Player's Handbook, there's a great section on how to create a character in there. ;) If not it's going to be a little trickier.

I may get boo'ed for this, but I highly recommend downloading this:
http://www.planetadnd.com/dl_manager/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=106

Use that to get your character more or less put together, and then let your DM tweak it for you. By the time you make your next character, or level a few times with this one, you'll have probably played enough to be able to make tweaks yourself to get everything right - or possibly do a straight paper-and-dice generation (which is what I prefer, myself.)
