Critical Role's fourth campaign will launch on October 2nd, with Brennan Lee Mulligan behind the GM Screen. Critical Role announced that Mulligan, best known as the DM for Dropout's Dimension 20, will be the Game Master for the entirety of Campaign 4. The announcement was made this evening ahead of tonight's live show in Indianapolis, with Mulligan running a campaign in a brand new world assumably created just for the show. Critical Role stated that more cast announcements and other details about the campaign, such as what game system it will use, will be revealed in the coming months.

Mulligan has worked with Critical Role in the past, with both of his Exandria Unlimited miniseries having received high praise from fans. The news is also a major shakeup as this will be the first time that a full-length Critical Role campaign has not featured Matt Mercer or the world of Exandria. Both Mercer and Exandria are "taking a break" according to a press release, although Mercer is working on a second Age of Umbra miniseries that will assumably be released sometime in 2026.

I think they didn’t announce the system. Cause they don’t know what system it’ll be yet. If they did I don’t see why they wouldn’t say. So I think either D&D or Daggerheart are possible.

Also I think they are doing a new world so they can untangle IP and do Daggerheart in a clean IP way if they so choose.

Most likely. Though that would be an epic mistake considering they are the main draw. The whole OG cast at one table is Critical Role.
Really depends who they pair up with. I think fresh blood that can create some new player dynamics and change of pacing might be a good thing for them. Plus it gives them the opportunity to have reunion games that brings the OG back for special occasions. At some point, the band needs to break up to allow growth.

Do we know what system they're using?
The announcement video said “new story, new world, new game master.” I’m guessing if they were switching systems it would have said “new system” or “new rules” or something but it didn’t. So, I assume D&D until they say otherwise. Though whether that’s pre- or post- 2024 changes I don’t know.

“New World” also probably implies it’s not the Exandria setting.

For those who don't watch Game Changer, and thus don't get the "Mark Mercer" or Brennan retiring jokes (videos mildly NSFW):

The episode was all about seeing who could create the most viral bits. Winner TBA in August.

Considering it's dropping in two months, they need to get with the announcements.

I'd be amazed if they didn't already have the system in place and at least a few tester episodes in the can. Maybe not the actual first episodes, but session zeros and session ones to get a feel for each other, the table, the game, the characters, etc. I know they did that with campaign 2 and 3.
