Now, if you are playing in a homebrewed setting..I have the perfect way to your GM's favor.
Become absolutely fascinated with the setting. Start asking about Old Man Snarfblatt's personal history. Ask about local customs of that village you are staying in. Ask about the hierarchy system of the Orc tribe to the north.
If you suddenly start becoming interested in all those painstaking details your GM has probably created only to be completely ignored, they will love you forever!
the above only works if your GM makes all that stuff, if you realize that they don't, don't go that way, but otherwise that is a good one.
