Can Dextyr Keep All These Strikers Alive? (DM: JoeNotCharles, Ozymandias79 Judging)

I like that idea as well. The only problem I see with it is, for example, my last post and Rens last post. I began my post well before Ren did, but he managed to sneak his in before I actaully submitted mine (I worked on it on and off for about half an hour). In cases like that, I would have to redo my post since Ren snuck in and changed the situation. No big deal - I'll just have to speed up my posting.

Of course, if a DM wanted to add a ton of 'realism' to combat encounters then he'd make such posts stand. For example, Bob the dragonborn is going to breath fire on an area and as he submits his post he sees that Jim the rogue has moved into the area to attack the same group of targets (darn Jim beat out his slow posting). Oops, too bad for Jim cause he now gets covered in fire breath too. I used to have a DM that ran combats like that where you'd write down your actions on a peice of paper and submit them and then the DM would look them over and explain the chaos that had unfolded. Init determined who went first, but yor actions stood now matter what happened. It was crazy.

As Mikara crosses the road, she scans the trees alertly for more hidden foes. She spots none, but she does see

[sblock=Mikara]
that large logs have been stacked behind several of the trees near the road, held back with ropes. You recognize it as a deadfall trap - if the ropes are cut, the logs will tumble down, blocking the road. (The brown square on the map marks the area that will be hit by rolling logs if the trap is triggered.)

Realizing her precarious position, she sidesteps quickly out of the danger zone. Even as she moves she is putting an arrow to her bow - it takes the halfling cleanly through the throat, felling it in mid-stride.

Oblivious to the danger, Tonk stumbles to the edge of the road and hurls his dagger at the other halfling, barely visible through the trees. It spins lazily end-over-end, strikes a branch, and falls to the dirt. The ringing in Tonk's ears gradually fades.

Dextyr yells a lot, and blood gushes out of the retreating bandit's ears. As it claps its hand to its head and moans, Tristan circles around behind it and runs it through. As the bandit falls, he turns his attention to the lone remaining halfling.

"F***," says the halfling.

Tristan shifts to A16.

Mikara moves to K19, makes a Perception roll, and notices... something. She shoots Slinger 2 for 29 damage, killing it instantly, and shifts to K17. Since you don't have a clear shot at anyone else, I'll ignore the AP instead of retargeting it.

Tonk moves to K16 and throws his dagger at Halfling 1, missing.

Dextyr heals blade for 11, belittles Bandit 2 for 10, and moves to B18.

Tristan hits Bandit 2 for 11, killing it, swears an Oath of Enmity against Halfling 1, and moves to B13.

Tonk's daze wears off.

Blade's posted action is invalid now, so I'll need a new one.

23 - Halfling Slinger 1 at C13 (0 damage, used Stone Rain)
19 - Mikara (24/24 hp)
18 - Tonk (19/24 hp)
17 - Dextyr (20/28 hp)
13 - Tristan (24/28 hp, Oath of Enmity on Halfling 1)

9 - Halfling Slinger 2 at J10 (29 damage, used Stone Rain)
7 - Human Bandit 2 at B17 (46 damage, -2 to hit until end of Dextyr's next turn)

[sblock=OOC]I'm a little confused. I assume we go ahead and post our actions, now. Correct? If this doesn't fit the timeline, I'll retcon.[/sblock]

"Aaaaagh!" screams Tonk in shock, covering his ears, "He say super dirty word! It horror! It nasty! Baby angel cry!"

"I wash you mouth out with soap!"

"And sand!"

"And lye!"

"And maybe rock!"

Enraged, the young half orc charges. [Minor Action: Hunter's Quarry on remaining halfling. Move Action: from K18 to F15. Standard Action: Charge! from K18 to D13. (Using mace with both hands.) v. "You is bad person!" shouts Tonk, striking again. [Spend Action Point. Standard Action: King's Castle v. Reflex (1d20+6=24), Damage (2d8+4=17)]

ALL DAMAGE IS NON-LETHAL.

Wiping the blood from his eyes, Blade looks upon the halfling, his eyes flaring a bright white and he calls out "You shall pay for that coward!".

The deva rushes over to the halfling and swings his axe in a sweeping arc, leaving in its wake swirling radiant energy that keeps foes at bay.

No, only Blade has an action now - everyone posted, except Blade posted out of turn so by the time it was his turn, his target was already dead. So he needs to post a different action. Then if, the Halfling's still alive, it gets to go. Then it's a new round.

Mal Malenkirk-style combat will start with the next fight - I didn't want to change in the middle of a fight.

Just skimmed Blade's post and it looks like the halfling is still alive. Although, OUCH - those two Avengers have a nasty double-team attack. If they end up adjacent to the same enemy, it can't move away from Tristan without taking damage from him, and it can't stay next to Blade without taking damage from him!

The halfling looks back and forth between the two killers flanking it. "Ah, s***," it mutters. "I'm not being payed enough for this." Suddenly it dodges towards Tristan and kicks him in the kneecap, knocking him momentarily off balance. As Tristan regains his balance, it spins and runs past blade, ducking under the swing of his axe, which does barely more than part its hair.

The halfling scampers through the woods, weaving between trees, until it reaches the side of the road directly across from where the bandit Tonk charged was concealed. Hanging from the trees here is another rope, identical to the one Tonk saw the bandit guarding. "See ya!" the halfling calls across the road as he pulls on the rope.

A taut line, concealed beneath the dirt of the road and running between the two clumps of trees, springs up as ropes give way with the SPROING of released tension. There's an ominous creaking in the trees as logs start to rumble. Streams of logs roll out from both sides of the road, meeting in the middle with a thundering crash. The falling logs roll right past Mikara - and the halfling curses again as he realizes he misjudged where she was standing - but Tonk is nicely kneecapped. He pitches over, barely landing on his knees instead of his back, and immediately bashed in the back of the head by an especially large log. It feels like being hit with a giant's club.

As the logs roll to a halt, Tonk regains his feet. He's now standing in a bed of logs that cover the road and roll treacherously back and forth as he tries to walk across them. This might have been a very effective ambush if you'd approached on the road.

Blade puts his Oath of Enmity on Halfling Slinger 1, moves to D13, and hits it with Avenging Echo for 9 damage.

Halfling 1's Stone Rain does not recharge. It shifts to D14, adjacent only to Blade (kicking Tristan was just flavour to explain how it got away from him), then moves. Blade gets an OA, which I'll just roll myself to keep things moving:

19 to hit, 1 damage. The halfling forces him to reroll that with Second Chance: 20. Well, at least the damage was low.

Ok, it survives, moves to G18, and pulls the rope, setting off the deadfall trap. Logs tumble down, filling the brown square and critically hitting Tonk for 14 damage, bloodying him.

The 3x3 brown square is now difficult terrain.

Mikara's turn! (I'm ignoring Tonk's previously posted action since the situation has changed so much.)

23 - Halfling Slinger 1 at G18 (9 damage, used Stone Rain)
19 - Mikara (24/24 hp)
18 - Tonk (5/24 hp)
17 - Dextyr (20/28 hp)
13 - Tristan (24/28 hp, Oath of Enmity on Halfling 1)
13 - Human Bandit 1 at L18 (47 damage, used Dazing Strike)
12 - Blade (25/29 hp + 4 thp, enemies ending their turn adjacent and enemies that hit or miss Blade take 9 radiant damage until end of next turn)
9 - Halfling Slinger 2 at J10 (29 damage, used Stone Rain)
7 - Human Bandit 2 at B17 (46 damage)

Tonk gains 5 temporary HP when he's bloodied. Also, when it's his turn, he does practically the same thing as I posted previously, sans the move action. He'll charge the halfling, spend the AP, and attack again. Since Tonk is no longer flanking, he loses the +2 bonus to the first attack roll, reducing it to 23. The damage will drop to 11 for that attack, since it loses 2d6. Damage is still non-lethal.

"Aaaaagh!" screams Tonk in shock, covering his ears, "He say super dirty word! It horror! It nasty! Baby angel cry!"

"I wash you mouth out with soap!"

"And sand!"

"And lye!"

"And maybe rock!"

Enraged, the young half orc charges, knees wobbling as the logs shift under him until he finally steps onto solid land and he brings his mace crashing down on the halfling. "Wait!" it cries. "Don't kill me! Don't you even want to know who hired --" Then Tonk's second blow hits him and he collapses unconscious.

[sblock=Final Status]
Tonk puts his Hunter's Quarry on Halfling 1, charges to H18, and spends an AP to hit it twice for 28 damage. (I assume he's still using King's Castle for the 2[W] damage output, even though he has no adjacent allies to swap with.) That knocks him out!

23 - Halfling Slinger 1 at G18 (37 damage, used Stone Rain)
19 - Mikara (24/24 hp)
18 - Tonk (5/24 hp + 5 thp, Hunter's Quarry on Halfling 1)
17 - Dextyr (20/28 hp)
13 - Tristan (24/28 hp, Oath of Enmity on Halfling 1)
13 - Human Bandit 1 at L18 (47 damage, used Dazing Strike)
12 - Blade (25/29 hp + 4 thp, enemies ending their turn adjacent and enemies that hit or miss Blade take 9 radiant damage until end of next turn)
9 - Halfling Slinger 2 at J10 (29 damage, used Stone Rain)
7 - Human Bandit 2 at B17 (46 damage)
