Can Wall of force be used like this?

Scenario: One flying PC gets a wall of force casts in a sphere around them virtually sealing them off. Wall is immovable, does not targe the PC but is created in the air around them.

Do they get a reflex save for this? Can wall of force be done like this to seal in a creature similar to beads of force?

IMC, there would be at the very least a reflex save. Maybe I would require a ranged touch attack by the caster if the target was moving. (My own PC is currently the only one who can cast that spell, and so far I have just used it as a measure of protection, or to block off a door or hallway.)

I'd think that if you are trying to put the sphere around a creature, then that creature effectively becomes the "target" of the spell. I think a Reflex save to avoid it would be good idea.

The rules do not grant a save to avoid being captured inside a wall of force. The definitely should allow a save, but they don't.

BTW, that's an interesting point about a wall of force being able to hover in mid air like that. :)

By the rules, it would not allow a save. The spell description specifically refers to the sphere and hemisphere & mentions no change in the "no save" (and no SR) category. Presumably you can't dodge it since you never see it form (invisible) around you, and it isn't directly affecting you. Should it have a save? I think so, but that would be a house rule.

For this reason, wall of force falls into the same category as spells like harm - obviously broken, never erratta'd, often house ruled.

For balance reasons, Wall of Force definitely needs to allow a save. If taken literally as written, it becomes just as powerful as Forcecage, which is a higher-level spell with an expensive material component.

How is it broken? Say you want to exclude that spell caster with a 5th level spell. Bingo. But he can always teleport of dimension door out of there. Why would you get a reflex save for something that forms AROUND you. And it lasts 1 minute/level. I can't see why this would be such a bad thing. Its a good way of splitting up the party and give them a harder challenge.

And come on. Its not like Harm at 6th level that pretty much kills a creature with no save. Its a barrier that protects both sides. I do not think its something that needs to be erratted out. No save. Magic missle doesn't get a save yet no one seems to complain about that.

I do agree that forcecage looses its usefulness compared to wall of force. I would think forcecage a 6th level spell with a less expensive component though.
