Can you layer weapon enchantments?

In general, I assume no (You can't have a 7x keen +3 sword for instance).

What about a 3x Flaming Sword? You can have a flaming, shocking, frost sword. Do the rules allow this (I would as a DM but I want to know what the rules say).

Could you have a 2x throwing enchantment on a weapon to get +20 ft range?

I have a feeling that you can't do any of these, but I can't find it in the DMG.

The stacking rules for such effects are a little weak.

I also think that this is not possible in any way.

You can't stack them, but most on these boards agree that there's no reason to ban it - as you pointed out, other elements stack with each other.

Well, if you want a +4 sword just to have that much stacked fire, Go for it. Me, I'd rather have Wrathful Healing. :)

Though, it does seem a little odd. First, your sword surges with flame. Now... it surges with more? What, is it a bonfire on a hilt?

The reason you can't find it in the DMG is because the default for anything in D&D is 'you can only take it once'. If there's a way to take it multiple times, there's a specific callout in the rules on how to handle it. Since there's no specific callout, no flaming flaming flaming swords.

If you want a longer range on your +1 throwing returning greataxe you should look at the distance ability...once you have throwing on the weapon, it is a ranged weapon and thus eligible.

The best rule you'll find is that you must "reroll if you get a duplicate special ability", given as a note under each of the special ability tables for armor and weapons.

Also of note, you cannot have abilities that are directly opposite of each other (IE, holy and chaotic, or flaming and frost) on the same weapon. Otherwise, IIRC, abilities stack, so you can have something like a Flaming Shock Longsword +3.

Holy and Unholy are opposites, not holy and chaotic. (A holy chaotic sword would be good for a CG character!)

Also, since both flaming and frost are 'on command' (not 'when drawn'), there is no reason you couldn't have both on the same weapon - just not both active at the same time.

Personally, I wouldn't want a flaming thundering corrosive shocking weapon - since all of the abilities are 'on command' it takes a standard action to put up each one. The fights would be over before I got into them!
