Can you wake an ally hit by the Sleep spell?

We've been playing that you can't since it is magical sleep. It also specifies that save ends the effect, and doesn't mention any other way to wake the sleeping opponent.

Sleep Wizard Attack 1
You exert your will against your foes, seeking to overwhelm them
with a tide of magical weariness.
Daily ✦ Arcane, Implement, Sleep
Standard Action Area burst 2 within 20 squares
Target: Each creature in burst
Attack: Intelligence vs. Will
Hit: The target is slowed (save ends). If the target fails its
first saving throw against this power, the target becomes
unconscious (save ends).
Miss: The target is slowed (save ends).

Compare this with the level 9 Rogue power Knockout (as well as lvl 15 power Garrote Grip)

Knockout Rogue Attack 9
A well-placed blow takes your foe out of the fight.
Daily ✦ Martial,Weapon
Standard Action Melee weapon
Requirement: You must be wielding a light blade.
Target: One creature
Attack: Dexterity vs. Fortitude
Hit: 2[W] + Dexterity modifier damage, and the target is
knocked unconscious (save ends). If the unconscious target
takes any damage, it is no longer unconscious.

Miss: Half damage, and the target

Strangely, the rules for being unconscious don't specify how to wake them up either.

UNCONSCIOUS
✦ You’re helpless.
✦ You take a –5 penalty to all defenses.
✦ You can’t take actions.
✦ You fall prone, if possible.
✦ You can’t flank an enemy.

I did find this under Sleeping and Waking Up on pg 263

When you’re asleep, you’re unconscious (see “Conditions,”
page 277). You wake up if you take damage or if
you make a successful Perception check (with a –5 penalty)
to hear sounds of danger. An ally can wake you
up by shaking you (a standard action) or by shouting (a
free action).

I don't think this works with the Sleep spell however. When you are asleep, you are unconscious. But just because your unconscious doesn't mean you are asleep. And even though the spell is called Sleep it doesn't put you asleep, it makes you unconscious.

So, if you become unconscious due to the Sleep spell, is there any way to wake up from it other than succeeding a save? Can an ally wake you?

Succeeding at a save (or various effects that automatically end conditions that could be ended by a save) is the only way I've seen. The Heal skill can be used to give somebody an additional save.

bolean is correct. You can describe the Heal skill application as "trying to wake them up," but that is the closest you are going to get with the RAW.

I think an official somewhere (Sage Advice maybe?) said the same. You need to make the save and that's that.

As written, no you can't wake an ally up from Sleep. However, when I DM, the sleep spell has been added to include the text from the rogue power: "If the unconscious target takes any damage, it is no longer unconscious." I added it for balance sake, plus the possibility of the orb of mastery/sleep combo versus solo creatures.

The name 'sleep' is a bit of baggage from the old editions, IMO. It doesn't put you to sleep it makes you unconcious.....So any 'wake from sleep' stuff is irrelevant. IMO You can give them another save (various powers etc) but apart from that allies cannot do anything.

Sleep spell is not something you want to hit an ally with. Most other area effects can be worth 'taking one for the team', but not Sleep.

No.

And your opponents can't wake up their allies either.

They are not asleep, they are magically unconscious.

You can use various powers to grant them extra saves or bonus on their save. (And I'm tempted to allow orb wielder's to use their orb in reverse to grant a bonus to a save instead - but I really haven't thought about it yet).

Edit: Note - among the various means to grant an extra save is the use of the Heal Skill (DC 15). So, in essence, you can try to wake them up via application of the Heal Skill, but they still need to save successfully.

I know. I meant, if the enemy cast Sleep on one of your allies, could you wake them like normally. Or, if you cast Sleep on an opponent, and hit them while their are unconscious, will they wake up?

In either case, this has been answered. Thank you everyone!
