Can't find a system I like for...

If M&M character creation was a bit overwhelming for the OP, Champions is probably not a good choice. Fine game and I like it quite a bit, but it ain't for everyone.
That's what I was thinking as well. As much as I love Champions/Hero, it's not for everyone. About the closest I would recommend is Hero's Sidekick rules.

All your genre are belong to M&M, in my world currently.

Except horror, perhaps. Not that I've tried that yet. . . and I might not even try. But this is why I posted in this thread, in fact: nothing has really yelled 'Run me. Run ME!' *and* lived up to it, in the field of horror RPGs. There have been some fun times with CoC, nWoD, and a couple of other things, briefly. But nothing has quite done it, just so. Fantasy, covered. Espionage, likewise. Same goes for Modern Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Space Opera, Historical (well, some,) Comic Book Heroes, and so on. But yeah, Horror never quite gets there. Not to the extent I would like.

That, and some of the missing historical time/place slices. But there will always be some of those missing, I expect.

My advice: don't find the perfect system. I wasted many years searching for it.

It comes down to finding just one that is enjoyable to play, and then make an effort (through houseruling and storytelling) to make it entertaining for you and your group.

Semantics. I have adjusted my orginal post to reflect that by "perfect" I meant "playable" with an implied "for me an my group without a degree of effort that takes it to a point of dimishing returns." Although you may be right in that what I am going to have to do is just bite the bullet and figure it out on my own.

@Aus_Snow: Have you looked at Unknown Armies for Horror?

You could try looking up Truth & Justice. Very simple characters, much more is left up to the imagination than not, and no charts.

Or you could try Wushu. Game is actually built so that detailed descriptions of actions are rewarded while the actual system is monkey-simple.

Some good then, I take it? Anything a person should know about it, a good site, whatever?

The author's official site is here. It's got a pretty slick dice mechanic, and the psych system works very well. I personally am not a huge fan of the setting (which is a good 75% of the main rulebook), but lots of people really love it.

Second vote for Truth & Justice, though it is possible you might find the PDQ damage mechanic a bit unorthodox, so do look into that first (the PDQ core rules are available for free at RPGnow).

I have to throw in a second fighting chance for 4C. Yes, it has the chart, but it has the one chart, that's it. Beyond the charts you could use in character creation, one chart rules it all.

As for the goofy character generation process, yes, I hear you, but it doesn't have to be done that way. The truth is that most heroes created with the system tend to be more or less on the same level, so just choose. Say you have 300 rank points (or 400 or 500) to create your character, and go to town (I'll even throw in a free Heroic Moment to kickstart things). Alternate character creation methods is one thing I want to explore in a future 4C supplement.

Don't diss 4C outright; it is rules light, and extremely flexible, capable of handling a lot with the basic mechanic.

MnM Character Creation tools coming

If you like everything about MnM, except for the complex character creation, the folks over at Lone Wolf Studios are working on a Mutants and Masterminds data set for Hero Lab. They were hoping for a March release, but it sounds like its still probably a month or possibly two away.

If you haven't seen Hero Lab, I think its one of the best and most versatile d20 character creation tools available. There's still some work they need to do on it, and some campaign support components are on the way in their next update (hopefully in the next week or two).

http://www.wolflair.com/

Colen and Rob are both very helpful on the support forums, and they're working hard to make this one of the most versatile RPG tools that I've ever seen.

You know the most interesting thing about this whole thread giving advice on various systems for Supers games is the fact that wasn't my question. I wasn't really asking for suggestions. Not that I don't appretiate it, but I know from experiance that saying 'I don't care for X' around here just leads to people trying to defend 'X' or offer alternatives that really aren't different (Marvel Super Heroes compared to 4C for example.)

And the simple fact of the matter is I have more games than I have time to play now. I would love to play a good supers game at somepoint, just not really in the market for one at the moment.

I was asking if other people found that they really wanted to play a certain type of game and couldn't find the system for it, not because there were not systems out there for it but that none of the extant ones really satisfied what you had in mind.

As for the various comments:

Charts for character creation are fine. I don't have a problem with that. Its charts once game play starts that I don't care for, and one chart is one too many generally speaking. Having said that I have thought about playing around with 4C, maybe seeing if I can graft some optional roll resolution mechanic on to it. Which I realize would radically alter it, but just as an avenue of consideration.

The Character Creation process is not the only thing we didnt like about MnM. So just having an easier way to deal with that part is not enough. Plus I have players (my wife for example) that are constantly checking the math on their sheets in DnD and wouldnt trust a program to do something they didnt understand.

The best thing about Unknown Armies is the various possible reactions to horror built into the system. It has its faults but I would recommend it for a good horror mechanic.
